  • Human Rights Movement

    Human Rights  Movement
    • an idea that each of us has basic rights by virtue of our humanity alone • the human rights movement began during World War II due to the atrocities occurring because of it. •everyone one should live in equality, dignity and freedom •It was an attempt to issue a resounding no to the question of whether a government could impose atrocities on its own people, such as the genocide in Nazi-Germany, based on its right to sovereignty.

    •Since 1848 women fought for equal right, liberty, and the right to vote
    •The 18th Amendment allowed women to finally vote
    •They were beginning to have more freedom and liberty in many different aspects
    •They could now work and not be judged
    •They could finally wear jeans!

    -reflects core human rights principles such as that human rights must be universal (for everyone), protected without discrimination, equitable, and indivisible (governments cannot protect some rights but not others).

    Homosexual/Lesbian Rights Movement
    • LGBT movement
    • it advocates for the full acceptance of LGBT people in society
    • in this movements: LGBT people and thier allies have a long history of campaigning for what is now generally called LGBT rights, sometimes also called gay rights or gay and lesbian rights.
    • goal: social equality for LGBT people
    • the mission: the creation of a society in which lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people enjoy the constitutional rights of equality, privacy and personal autonomy, and freedom
  • Mexican-American/Chicano Movement

    Mexican-American/Chicano Movement
    •Mexican Americans began noticing the different way they were treated •Affected cities such as Denver, El Paso, Sacramento, L.A., Fresno, and many others •Mainly the children/teens in their schools began seeing the difference •Parents started seeing the difference right after •Had a major effect on young children and teenagers •Resulted into numerous school drop-outs •Students and the young community began creating organizations •Parents and students began demanding help/support

    -Has facilitated the movement
    -On the other it has provoked a backlash
    -Some argue that there is evidence of increased homogenization and that all will march under the same flag
    -People feel that their traditional way of life is changing to rapidly and LGBT people often become scapegoats i most places around the world
    -LGBT are made into a criminal class (group) known as "in-apprehend Felons"
    -California legalized gay marriage on 09/02/2005
    -New Jersey legalized it on 10/21/2013

    •The law wanted to arrest illegal evn leagl Mexicans
    •Kept stressing they were dangerous to the community
    •People statred throwing pro-test and get the community to put an end to it
    •Major political controversy

    •Deragatory terms towards racial groups •Racist jokes •Assumptions made my looking at your skin color •Teachers expecting white kids to be smarter and acting shocked when a person of color knows the right answer •Seperation in social groups •Teachers trying to help white students get their grades up, and not the students of color. •Racial Profiling •Negative comments about biracial couples •Seperated social groups •Gang injunction
