Greek Theater Change Over Time

    BC

At this time, in BC, the idea of having one character to interact with the chorus was invented. This person only had changing times between the songs the chorus sang. The only way to know which character the actor was playing was to use masks. The color of the hair on the mask changed from character to character to show who was who.

As time went on, plays changed and, by the 5th century, three person plays were being performed. Each actor still had to play many characters, but had less of a load on their shoulders. Again, masks were used to tell you who each character was and how they were feeling.
