  • Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated

    Ferdinand was a heir to the Austrian- Hungarian throne. Because the assassin was Serbia, Austria used that as an excuse to punish Serbia. Austria then gave Serbia an ultimatum.

  • Austria declares war on Serbia and WWI begins

    When Austria punished Serbia with an ultimatum Serbia wanted to settle some of the demands with an international conference, but Austria did not want to negotiate therefore, war broke out.
  • The central powers and allies were formed

    The central powers were Germany, Austria-Hungary, ottoman empire, and Bulgaria. The allies were Great Britain, France, Russia, Japan, and Italy. These two enemies caused many great wars later on.
  • Battle of the Marne

    First battle during WW1. When the French military was infrmed about what direction the German army was about to take the French military attacked northeast of Paris, in the valley of the Mane river.
  • Battle of Limanowa

    On the Eastern front. When the Austrian army with German assistance was in battle for 17 days in Limanowa, Austria. They defeated the Russians.
  • Gallipoli Campaign

    A battle where the Allied Powers tried to take the Dardanelles strait from the Ottoman Empire
  • Battle of Verdun

    Germans launched a massive attack against the French near Verdun on the western front.
  • Battle of Somme

    July- Septmeber 1916. Took place on the Western front. The British tried to relieve the pressure on the French, when the British attacked the Germans northwest of Verdun.
  • Germans announced their method of unrestricted submarine warfare.

    They could sink enemy submarines in their territory without warning any of the ships nearby.
  • Zimmerman note

    The British intercepted a telegram from Germany’s foreign secretary, Arthur Zimmerman, to the German ambassador of Mexico. The note said that Germany would help Mexico reconquer the land it lost to the U.S.
  • Vladimir Ilyich Lenin came to power

    He urged the idea of ending his country’s involvement in the war. First he offered Germany a truce.
  • World War 1 came to an end

    The central powers and the allies signed an armistice to stop fighting.
  • The treaty of Versailles was signed.

    Germany and the allies signed a peace treaty.
