    James Earl Ray was convicted of the killing of Martin Luther King Jr., a civil rights leader and an anti-war activist. He was convicted on March 10, 1969 when he had confessed the murder of MLK. Instead of the death penalty, he was snetenced to 99 years in prison. He later died in prison on April 23, 1998.
