Hitler met with his top military advisors privately. He decided that Germany needed to expand, and to do that, he needed to conquer the countried around them. He arranged to take Austria and Czechoslovakia into the Third Reich.

Most of Austrians had been in favor of establishing a union with Germany. On march 12, 1938, German troops were sent into Austria, and the next day declared that they had created a Anschluss, or union.

The Munich Agreement was a document signed by the French premier, Edouard Daladier, and the British prime minister, Nevilla Chamberlain. The document gave Germany posession of Sudetenland without any wars or violence.

To further expand his Third Reich, Hitler decided to take over the rest of Czechoslovakia. Once he finished his business there, he stated,"Czechoslovakia has ceased to exist."

The Germans were testing out their new attack strategy called the blitzkrieg, or lightning war. The German Luftwaffe, or airforce, dropped bombs all over Poland, specifically their military bases and cities. Germna tanks also drove through the Poland countryside.

After seeing what Germany had done to Poland, Britian and France declared war on Germany.

Hitler attacks Denmark and Norway without any warning. He claims that he does this to protect the freedom and independence or other countries. Instead, he builds bases on the coast in order to attack Great Britain.

Hitler hand surrender documents to French officers at Compiegne. They agree to have the norther part of France be occupied by the Germans, and the southern part of France would contain a Nazi-controlled puppet government.

For two months, 2,000 German aircraft flew over London and bombed the city every night.

On this day, the Royal Air Force of Britian, or the RAF, shot down 185 of the 2,000 German planes that had been bombing London for two months. The RAF only lost 26 of their planes. Six weeks later, the invasion of London was called off by Hitler.
