    These indians lived nearly 12,000 years ago. They hunted very large animals such as the mammoth. To kill these beasts they used a spear head called the clovis point. They never stayed in one spot, so they had no permanent home. These indians had no mor than 50 people in their tribe.

    Archaic Imformation These indians, unlike the Paleo indians, chose to hunt smaller game animals and gather food due to the sxtinction of larger animals. As an affect of this they started hunting with a more thin pointed spear head. They started making pottery to preserve food longer. These indians moved homes seasonally.

    Hernando De Soto's expedition to America didn't go as he planned. He killed thousands of Native Americansduring battles. His search for gold had failed, He soon died somewhere along the Mississippi River.

    The Salzburgers arrived in October of 1731. They were forced to leave their home so they came to Georgia. They came to Georgia to permanently settle. The new colonists founded a new town called Ebenezer.

    Henry Ellis was the second royal governor of Georgia. He fostered a good relationship with natives. He also promoted farming and slaves. He had to leave Georgia due to heat related illnesses.

    James Wright was the third and final royal governor of Georgia. He served from October 1,1760 to July 11,1782. He improved Ellis's polocies. He also enforced the stamp act regardless of opinions.

    Served under Elijah Clarke. Believed to be the only black soldier to fight at the Battle of Kettle Creek. He was severely wounded during the fight/ battle. He was cared for by the Harris family.

    In 1867 blacks voted for the firsts time. The first republican governor was elected. 29 black legislators are elected in Georgia. All 29 were expelled from the General Assembly, because the had the right to vote, but not the right to hold office.

    Booker T. Wahington lived to be 59 years old. He was born a slave on a Virginia farm. In 1881 he founded the Tuskegee Institute. He died in Novemebr of 1915.

    Scott was a slave. His owner moved to a free state. Scott sues for freedom thinking he should be free. The court says he is not free because he is property not a citizen. The South supported this but the North did not.

    Alonzo Herndon was born in 1858. He was the president of the Atlanta Life Insurance Company. Herndon was also Atlanta's wealthiest black citizen at the time of his death in 1927. Alonzo Herndon was born into slavery.

    W.E.B. DuBois

    Dubois is widely recognized as a significant figure. Duboise is known for his pursuit of social justice, for his literary imagination, and for his pioneering scholarly research. He was born in 1858. Dubois died in 1963 living to be 103 years old.

    Abraham Lincoln won presidency after he was elcted in 1860. He said that he would keep slavery where it already existed. The South did not like this and wanted to leave the union. Georgia left the union.

    The unions formed a blockade. This strategy disrupted all confederate ports. It kept the south from getting much needed supplies for the war. Secret vessels made it through the blockades and got supplies to Georgia.

    This was the most distructive campaign against civilians during the Civil War. Sherman marched across Georgia to the Atlantic Ocean. He did this to prove that the people of Georgia could not be protected. He destroyed everything in his path.

    The KKK was formed in 1865. The clan found its start in Pulashi, Tennessee. It was formed by former confederate soldiers. It was formed to intimidate blacks through violence to keep them from voting and exercising their rights.

    This amendment was adopted in July of 1868. This was one of the reconstruction amendments. It made all free slves citizens. The amendment adresses citizenship rights and equal protection of laws.

    Vinson Graduated with a law degree from Mercer University in 1902. Vinson lived to be 97 years old. He was the youngest member of congress. Vinson also served as a representative of Georgia.

    Eugene Talmadge was a Democrat. Eugene played a leading role in the state's pollotics during this time. He was born on a family farm. Talmadge earned a law degree in athens.

    William B. Hartsfield died at the age of 80. Hartsfield was the mayor of Atlanta. This man served as the 49th and 51st mayor of Atlanta, Georgia. Hartsfield is credited with developing Atlanta's airport into a national aviation center.

    John became the first black president of Morehouse University. He mariied to a women of different race to him. Georgia law did not approve of this. They were both civil rights leaders.

    Lester Maddox grew up in poverty. In 1933 he dropped out of high school and started working. Maddox was governor of Georgia. He died in June of 2003.

    Dr. King attended several colleges and universities. He led a brand new Montgomery Improvement Association. He also led marches. He was assassinated a day after he gave his final speech.

    The Great Depression was caused by the stock market crashing in 1929. The depression hit the douth the hardest. The New Deal programs helped recover from the depression. The Great Depression caused many economic problems during this time.

    This act was formed in 1933. This act was incorporated to help farmers who were struggling financially. The act was part of the New Deal programs. This act helped farmers in need.
  • Civilian Conservation Corps

    The Civilian Conservation Corps was part of the New Deal programs established by Fraklin Roosevelt. THis helped preserve natural resources. Franklin D. Roosevelt wanted to help preserve the natural resources.

    Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter

    These people desegregated UGA in 1961. They were students there. Holmes was a surgeon in Atlanta untill he died in 1995. He was the first African American member of the University Foundation's Board of Trustees in 1983.

    Linda Brown tried to enroll in an all white school in Topeka, Kansas. This 7 year old's entry was denied. Her father sued the school. This action soon integrated schools in the Brown V. Board of Eductaion case.

    During the Civil War Georgia did not have an official state flag. After the states secession in 1861 newspapers reported secession flags. IN 1956 legislation to put a confederate flag on Georgia's state flag sailed through the General Assembly. The Georgia state flag was first changed to incorporate the St. Andrew's cross.

    Sibley Commission
    The segregation in Atlanta's public schools were ruled unconstitutional. The school system was forced to integrate. A constitutional amendment forcing the governor to cut off state funding to any school that desegregated was incorporated. Using the Sibley Commission, the governor asked the citizens how they felt about the integrated schools in Atlanta.

    This was a student-led group. This group was one key orginization in the American Civil Rights movement in the 1960's. In Georgia SNCC concentrated its efforts in Albany. This group protested segregation.

    This was the first mass movement in civil rights era. The movement resulted in more than 1,000 African Americans being put in jail. Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested along with others. King left Albany admitting he had failed.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    Many Americans gathered in Washington D.C. for a political march. At this time more than 200,000 people gathered to march. This was organized by civil rights and religious groups. The event was designed to shed light on political and social challenges African Americans face.
  • Civil Rights Act

    This act ended segregation in public places. This act took place after the Civil War. Segregation on race, religion, or national origion was banned. These were all banned at all places of public accommodation.

    Jimmy Carter was elected president of the United states. He is the only Georgian to become president. He served in the United States Navy and on Georia's General Assembly. He also was governor of Georgia. Jimmy Carter is living today.

    Andrew Young was born on March 12, 1932. Supporting Civil Rights and leadership, Young became a trusted aide to MLK Jr. Young is a professor at Ga. State University (UGA). After King was assassinated many of his closest followers struggled. Andrew Young did not.

    Atlanta hosted the Centennial Summer Olympic games. 83,000 people were ar the olympic stadium on July 19, 1996.10,318 competitorscompeted in these games. The Olympic games made a lasting imprint on Atlanta.
