Surveying Virginia
George wanted very much to join the British Navy. His mother did not let him go to the Navy. So George joined George William Fairfax to see the unknown lands in Virginia which no one was there. As he wanted to make a map of new places in Virginia he studied geometric and mathematical books. -
Joining the Masonic Lodge
When Washington was 20 years old he joined a group of people in Virginia that wanted to help the community. The name of the group was Freemasons. -
Fort Necessity
As a lieutenant colonel in the Virginia Militia Washington went to the Ohio Territory with 100 men. His mission was to build a British fort at the Ohio River. On the way he met a French patrol and on the fight ten French soldiers died. Washington retreated and built a Fort Necessity. On July 3, the French attacked the fort, forcing Washington to surrender. -
Returning to Private Life
Frustrated that as a colonial officer he should have been recieved a British commission, Washington resigned from the army and returned to private life at Mount Vernon -

At the Second European Congress in Philadelphia on June 15th, Washington was chosen to be Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. This time he would be fighting against the British, not with them. -

Sworn in as First President
On the last day of April, Washington was sworn in as president at New York City's Federal Hall. He addressed a joint meeting of both houses of Congress, and sworn in as the first president of the United States of America. -
