In 2001 MIT decided to make course materials freely available online (faculty volunteer). OCW provides course materials (e.g., notes, syllabi, exams), not facilitated online learning experiences like EdX. It costs $10,000-15,000 per course to compile materials and clear IP rights for open licensing. Launched in 2002 with 32 courses, today it includes 2,500+ courses.
