Future Trends in Education

  • Digital Literacy

"The ability to effectively and critically navigate, evaluate and create information using a range of digital technologies." Working at a middle school, in a lower socioeconomic community has shown me how important including the teaching of digital literacy in our curriculum is. Shifting away from solely traditional learning, and towards the ability to access and incorporate a variety of digital technologies into the classroom is already beginning, and will only continue to grow.
  • Social Media in Education

Integrating social media into the classroom is something with real value. It allows the students to take the conversation home, and access each others ideas at any given time. However, there needs to be rules and procedures put in place by the teacehr, and constant monitoring as to the validity and appropriateness of the conversation
  • Mobile Education

Our school is looking into purchasing a tablet lab for the students to use, which will open up a world of possibilities to allow them access to digital media and interactive features of the curriculum in place in the classroom. BYOD is another interesting idea which deserve a discussion among the district higher-ups, since there are many issues, but also numerous benefits to this idea.
  • The Flipped Classroom

I see the middle school level adopting the idea of flipped teaching later than high schools. Accountability of the students to actually watch the online lectures and come to class prepared to work is something that will take time to instill in children. If teh elementary schools being to integrate online aspects into their rotations, then the flipped classroom will become much more feasible. Additonally, who will create the online portion of the flipped classroom will need to be addressed.
  • Blended Learning

Fully blended learning is a long term goal for the middle school grades. Accountability and access are issues which will need to be addresseed before it is implemented. I see blended learning as something which will impact my career as an administrator, as the aforementioned issues will be the job of admin. A shift in the traditional way we school children will be a hard shift to make, however it will be a valuable one.
