    French & Indian War (7 Years War)

    French and the Indians pitted against Britain. Won by Britain in 1763, but not without suffering monetary losses, which they attempted to recoup this with taxes upon the colonies which they were "protecting".

    Sugar Act (1764)

    Occoured following the events of the 7 Years War, which Britain believed that they were due taxes from America. This was an Update to the Molasses act of 1733, which had been largely unenforced, placing taxes on sugar from the West Indies. This tax, which was highly controversial amongst the American Colonies was repealed and replaced in 1766 with the much more lenient and less negatively received Revenue Act, which collected significantly less.

    Stamp Act (1765)

    This controversial act placed a tax on all printed goods, much to the dismay of many Americans. This tax, which affected everyone from news publishers to lawyers alike, angered colonists, who felt as if they were being unfairly taxed. Like the Sugar act, this was repealed in 1866.

    Influencial book exposing the horrors of slavery written by Harriet Beecher Stove. Inlfuentical in converting many people, popular abroad.
