At thi time though television was still a luxury but this was the first big presidential thing that happened on T.V. Soon after this many Americans had T.Vs in their homes.

President Eisenhower approved the words "Under God" into the Pledge of Allegiance. some poeple did not like this idea because it did not follow their religious beliefs. Eisenhower responded with, "In this way we are reaffirming the transcendence of religious faith in America's heritage and future; in this way we shall constantly strengthen those spiritual weapons which forever will be our country's most powerful resource in peace and war."

On this day the Polio vaccine was announced to the public. Dr. Jonas Salk and Thomas Francis, who are the founders of the vaccination announced it was successful. they announced it was 90% affective in curing paralytic polio.

In 1954, the Navy produced the first nuclear-powered submarine, which had a small reactor in the hull. The submarine's technology provided a model for the first nuclear power plant on land, which opened in Shippingport, Pennsylvania, in 1957. The first atomic nucleur power plant was established for only peacetime purposes.

Dwight Eisenhower passed the NASA establishment. NASA stood for the National Aeronautics Space Administration. The passing of this program showed the united States was commited to winning the space race against the Soviets.
