  • Louis fails to tax 2nd Estate

    st Estate (clergy/church) represented ~1% of the pop., owned ~10% of the land, and paid ~0.5% of the taxes collected by the French. 2nd Estate (key gov't figures and nobles) represented less than 2% of the pop. and controlled much of the wealth in France. 3rd Estate was ~97% of the pop., including peasants, artisans and city workers (sans culottes), and the bourgeosie (merchants and professionals), which paid ~98% of taxes. To solve financial crisis Louis tried & failed to tax 2nd Estate.
