    In the 1780's there was an economic crisis. France was trading with many countries, but they were getting in debt. This woried the common folk, or the Third Estate. There was crop failures because of bad weather. Also, the price of many crops doubled. It worried the Third Estate.
    I think this is an important event in History because it shows why France was poor. It also looks inside of the government.
  • Bastille Day

    On July 14 a mob came into Bastille. They went to a prison and killed the guards. They then stormed through the city with the heads of the people they killed on top of their sticks. About 100 people died that day. Today it is France's Independence Day.
    I think this is an important time in History because it became a day of Independence.
  • The Rights of Man

    The National Assembly came up with Revolutionary Ideas. They came up with the Decleration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. It stated, "'men are born and remain free and equal in rights.' The document also guaranteed citizens equal justice, freedom of speech, and freedom of religion." (McDougal, 23, Section 2.1)
    I think that was an important event because it gave men equal rights.

    Great fear rolled through France. Many peasants became outlaws and charged into nobles homes. On this day many Perisian women rioted over the price of bread. "First, they demanded that the National Assembly take action to provide bread. " (McDougal, 23, Section 1.4)
    I think this was an important event because people stood up for what was right. It showed that France's rulers weren't doing the right thing.

    Louis tried to escape from his own country. Many peasants told the King that him and his family were in danger. As they reached the border they were captured. Although this is not a huge event in History it is important to know. I think this was important because a King was afraid of his own country. It shows how hard it was to be a ruler.
  • New Constitution

    This new constitution took power away from the King and created a new legislative bosy, the legislative assembly. This branch made laws and approve or reject declarations of war. It still gave the King excucutive power. I think this is an important time in history because it starts the turning point of a new government.

    Prussian forces came into Paris. The commander threatened to destroy Paris if the revolutionaries harmed any members of the royal family. About 200,000 man and women invaded Tuileries and imprisones Marie Antoinette and her children. i think this was an important time in history because it was a war. It started with their revolution and now there was a war. France was trying to change.
  • Reign of Terror

    n 1793 he became the leader of the Committee of Public Safety. He ruled France as a dictator. The period that he ruled was called, "The Reign of Terror." ",,,justified his use of terror by suggesting that it enabled French citizens to remain true to the ideas of the Revolution:" (McDougal,23,Section 2.4) I think this is an important event because it let France know that Dictatorship is not the best form of government.
  • Arrest on Robespierre

    The Reign of Terror ended on July 28, 1794, when Robespierre went to jail. In 1795, the National Convention came up with a new government. The third government since 1789. This placed power in the hands of the middle class.
    I think this is an important event because it was a turning point for France. It takes a while for them to learn what works, they are slowly figuring it out.
  • Napoleon to Power

    Napoleon to Power

    Napoleon Bonaparte led his soldiers around the national legislature and dissolved the Directory. He became the dictator over France and completely changed the government. "A sudden seizure of power like Napoleon’s is known as a coup." (McDougal, 23, Section 3.1) I think this is an important event because there was a change in the government at this time. It meant new beginnings for France.
