The French and Indian War was a long struggle between Britain and France. Lasting for seven years, this battle ended with the signing of The Treaty of Paris.
After the signing of the Treaty, the arrangements made between Britain and France, strengthened the American colonies by removing opponents to the North and South, affording westward expansion. -
The Sugar Act extended the Molasses Act by changing the tax on imports from the Carribean from 6 cents per gallon to 3 cents per gallon. By cutting tax amount, the British where stamping out smuggling.
The colonists resented the Sugar Act and protested by boycotting British luxury goods and making their own. -
The Stamp Act declared that all printed material had to carry a stamp which was not free. This act was once again a way for Britain to make revenue.
The colonist's reaction to the Stamp Act brought on much discontent from the colonists and the Son's of Liberty revolted and the British government repealed the Act on March 18, 1766. -
The Declaratory Act was Britian's way of shaking their finger at the colonists saying, "We can tax you, we don't want to tax you, but just so you know we can". This Act was enacted on the same day the Stamp Act repealed.
The colonist's reaction to the Declaratory Act prompted protests where the slogan "No Taxation without Representation" began. They imposed boycotts on British goods and trading. -
The Townshend Acts were new customs Britain passed to stop smuggling, and taxed goods imported to the American Colonies.
The colonists saw this once again as an abuse of power by the British Parliament. Now women got involved and The Daughters of Liberty fought this battle by making home spun clothes to replace British ones. This did make merchants unhappy because their livelihood depended on importing of goods. -
The Tea Act imposed tax exceptions and rebates for tea coming in from the British East India Tea Company. This allowed them to dump cheaper tea on the colonies which actually lowered the price of tea.
The colonist's reaction to the Tea Act was hostile. They dressed up like Indians and dumped tea into the Boston Harbor. They were angry on principle as well as tea was a very popular beverage for all during that time frame. -
The Revolutionary War began after nearly a decade of tension between the colonists and Britian. The British had made countless attempts to impose control over the colonies. There were many Acts, laws and taxes imposed, which were very unpopular with the colonists. Hence, the beginning of a war that lasted nearly 8 years.
