    Vietnam War
    The Vietnam War was founded on fear. The US believed in the domino effect- that once one country became communist the others would follow. The US tried to prevent communism spreading to Vietnam. However, in the end the US was only making matters worse. Civilians who lived there were being murdered simply because they favored communism. In the end, Vietnam won and is still a successful communist country.
  • Elvis Presley

    Elvis Presley
    Elvis Presley was often times called "The King" or "The King of Rock 'n' Roll". He gained popularity very rapidly and soon enough became an icon! His first number one single was titled "Heartbreak Hotel". Much success followed Presley as his dance moves broke conservative traditions. Presley soon was everywhere- on the radio, on the TV, and on the minds of the young teens.

    Chapter 33: Section 2
    War in Vietnam: The War Escalates The group “Students for a Democratic Society” was a radical student group who helped the Antiwar Movement. However, many different people were part of this group ranging from ministers to regular citizens. This group arranged the first national antiwar protest in Washington DC. This diverse group protested "the draft, ROTC on campus and the recruitment efforts by the armed services, the CIA, and defense contractors."
  • University of Alabama Integration

    University of Alabama Integration
    The Federal Court ordered 2 black students to attend the University of Alabama and essentially integrating it. However, Governor Wallace of Alabama refused to let this happen. He stood in front of the school doors blocking the way for the students. President Kennedy then federalized the national guard to allow the students to enter the school making a monumental step in history.

    In Dallas, Texas, President JFK was riding in his convertible when the Secret Service men were ordered to leave. As he passed by the crowd, gunshots were fired. Kennedy was shot in the head and died immediately. Lee Harvey Oswald was later found guilty of the murder and coincidently got murdered as well.

    The Black Panther Party was a black power group created by African Americans. This organization encouraged "black self-defense", "justice", and "peace". This party often times made national headline because of their actions. They carried guns, firearms and were usually in "battles" with authority.
  • RFK Assassination

    RFK Assassination
    Just like his brother, JFK, RFK was also assassinated. RFK was assassinated in Los Angeles, California. RFK was killed during campaign time of 1968. He had won the democratic nomination for US president. A Palestinian-Jordanian immigrant named Sirhan Sirhan was convicted of Kennedy's murder and was sentenced to life.

    President Nixon
    President Nixon was known for the Silent Majority. The silent majority consisted of middle-class voters. Nixon won by "pledging to restore law and order and to cut back Democratic programs." His presidency was filled with accomplishments as well as disappointments. He reformed welfare, cleaned up the environment, but also was involved in the Watergate Scandal and escalated involvement in Vietnam.

    Apollo 11 is one of the most famous space missions. This spaceflight was the first to ever land humans on the moon. This mission essentially ended the Space Race- a rivalry between the US and the USSR. Today, this legacy lives on as textbooks teach students about the accomplishments of the commander, Neil Armstrong.

    Chapter 33: Section 3
    War in Vietnam: A Turning Point The Kent State Shootings was part of the antiwar protest movement. Someone set the ROTC building in Ohio on fire and thus Ohio's governor took the measures to get rid of these protesters. He ordered National Guard troops to deal with the situation. Four people were killed and nine were injured.

    From Nixon to Carter: From Watergate to Ford The Watergate Scandal was all about Nixon's power. He ordered "his staff to compile an 'enemies list'" of the people who didn't approve of his policies and proposals. The CIA and FBI participated in this act. However, 5 men were caught in the act of breaking in and the scandal went public. This scandal followed Nixon's resignation.

    Apple IPO
    Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak founded the Apple Inc. These bright young men created a company that would soon be everywhere today. The Apple Stock launched their IPO with 4.6 million shares at $22 per share in December. The money and millionaires made from this was incredible! This was the most successful stock people had seen at the time since the Ford Company.
