    The Vietnam War

    This war was fought between the communist North Vietnam and South Vietnam (whose principal ally was the US). In the movie, Forrest is an American soldier in this war and receives the medal of honor for his service.

  • The Assassination Of JFK

    JFK was the 35th president of the US and was assassinated while riding in a presidential motorcade through Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas. In the movie, Forrest meets JFK when he and his teammates of the All-American college football team travel to the white house. Forrest talks about how someone shot that "nice young president" sometime later.

  • The Watergate Scandal

    The Watergate Scandal began when several burglars were arrested in the office of the Democratic National Committee. The men were connected to President Nixon who attempted to cover up the crime but later resigned in August of 1974. In the movie, Forrest meets President Nixon and is assigned to the Watergate Hotel where he witnesses the burglary and exposes the crime.

  • Hurricane Carmen

    Hurricane Carmen was a destructive, intense, and widespread category 4 hurricane that affected Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Texas, Belize, Louisiana, Yucatán Peninsula, Hispaniola, and Lesser Antilles. In the movie, Forrest's shrimping boat is the only one to survive Hurricane Carmen.

  • The Murder Of John Lennon

    Returning from Record Plant Studio with his wife, Yoko Ono, John Lennon was shot dead by a man named Mark David Chapman in the archway of the Dakota (his residence in New York City). In the movie, Forrest goes on talk show with John Lennon just before his is killed.

    Little Forrest takes an interest in space and tells his father what he overheard his teachers (friends of Christa McAuliffe) talking about in school.
