  • The Korean War (1950-1953)

    The Korean War (1950-1953)
    The Korean War was fought between North Korea and South Korea. It began when North Korea's soldiers invaded the South and crossed the 38th parallel that divided them. The North was fighting to spread communism and the United States later joined in to help South Korea fight them off. Finally, 3 years later the war ended but the Korean peninsula is still divided.
  • Death of Emmett Till

    Emmett Till LegacyEmmett Till was an African American boy who's death sparked the Civil Rights movement. While visiting his family in the South, he entered a store and wistled at a white woman. For this reason, a group of white men kidnapped him from his home one night and brutally beat and shot him. After they killed the boy, they tied him up and threw his body into a lake. When Emmett Till was found, the white men were charged for murder but were found not guilty, which made African Americans very angry.

    Little Rock Nine 50 Years LaterLittle rock nine was a group of African American teenagers that went to Little Rock High School. During this time of segregation, the governor banned these students from entering their school because of their race. When the President heard about this days later, he made sure that the African American students got a police escort to make sure they entered the school everyday.

    Space RaceThe Space Race was a race between the Soviet Union and the United States to be the first to launch rockets, satellites, or living beings into space. It began in 1957 when the Soviets sent Sputnik into space, which was a satellite. Later, in 1961 the Soviets also sent the first man into space to orbit the earth. However, President Kennedy was determined to redeem the U.S. and sent out the first American to orbit earth a year later. It ended when the U.S. sent a man to land on the moon in 1969.

    The Vietnam War was a brutal war between north vietnam and south vietnam over communism. China and other communist allies were fighting to spread communism for the north while the United States and other anti-communist allies fought against communism for the south. South vietnam used a method called containment during the war so that communism would not be spread. Containment is a policy used to keep communism contained within its existing borders. Containment worked and the war ended soon after

    Martin Luther King I have a dream speechMartin Luther King was an African American civil rights leader who was most famous for his "I had a dream" speech that he gave in the march on Washington. He has always participated in many civil rights organizations and would fight against segregation in a civil way. Martin Luther King was a great leader for African Americans because of his determination to gain equality and he was the reason why so many other African Americans fought for their freedom.
  • JFK Assassination

    JFK assassinationJohn F. Kennedy was the 35th President of the United States who was assassinated on November 22, 1963 due to a gunshot. Lee Harvey Oswald shot him while he was riding in the backseat of a car in a parade with his wife. Lee Harvey Oswald was later arrested for murder but was shot before he could go to trial.
  • Watts Riots

    The Watts riot took place in Los Angeles due to segregation. It began when an African American man and his mother were pulled over by a white cop and was accused of driving intoxicated. The conflict got heated and the offier shoved the woman and had to use physical force to subdue the African American man. The public heard of this and soon African Americans joined the riot against segregation. The crowds grew and lasted 6 days, causing death, injuries, arrests, and property damage.
  • Tet Offensive

    The tet offensie was a series of fierce attacks on hundreds of cities in South Vietnam. It was created to stir rebellion in South Vietnam and encourage the United States not to support the saigon regime as much. The South was successful in fighting them off for a period of time but the North eventually won with the tet offensive.

    My Lai MassacreThe My Lai massacre was when American troops killed hundreds of innocent and unarmed civilians at My Lai. This took place during the Vietnam War when troops were sent out to South Vietnam. Hundreds of people were killed and injured yet hardly any of the troops were arrested or charged with murder. The President was unaware of the orders given to kill the unarmed people until after it happened. When this event was leaked to the public, Americans were horrified and lost trust in our government.
  • Watergate Scandal

    The Watergate Scandal took place in the Watergate building in Washington, D.C. when robbers were caught attempting to wiretap phones and steal secret documents for President Richard Nixon's reelection campaign. Its unknown if President Nixon was affiliated with the robbers but when it was brought to attention he tried to cover it up. He later resigned but the people became more suspicious of leaders and authorities afterward.
  • Paris Peace Accords

    The Paris Peace Accords was when the United States, South Vietnam, North Vietnam, and Viet Cong signed an agreement to end war and restore peace in Vietnam. It included a cease-fire throughout Vietnam and for the United States to remove troops and bases while North Vietnamese releases U.S. prisonersof war. An international control commission would also be established and the 17th parallel would remain.
