    Claimed he had a list of 205 people in the State Department who were known members of the American Communist Party. He investigated the list for 2 years.The panic arising from the witch-hunts and fear of communism became know as McCarthyism.

    The Supreme Court agreed that segregation in public schools is unconstitutional. The ruling paves the way for large-scale desegregation. The decision overturns the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson ruling that sanctioned "separate but equal" segregation of the races, ruling that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal." It is a victory for NAACP attorney Thurgood Marshall.

    Started pioneering efforts to launch artificial satellites, unmanned probes of the Moon, other planets, human spaceflight in low Earth orbit, and to the Moon. Then the Soviet Union responded to the United States announcement four days earlier of intent to launch artificial satellites for the International Geophysical Year, by declaring they would also launch a satellite "in the near future".

    Kennedy was fatally shot by a sniper while traveling with his wife Jacqueline, Texas Governor John Connally, and Connally's wife Nellie, in a presidential motorcade. Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald, acting alone, and that Jack Ruby also acted alone when he killed Oswald before he could stand trial.

    Communist North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces captured the South Vietnamese capital of Saigon, forcing South Vietnam to surrender and bringing about an end to the Vietnam War. The fall of Saigon came just over two years after the United States, ally of South Vietnam, pulled out of the Vietnam War with the signing of the Paris Peace Accords.
