After North Vietnamese forces attacked U.S. Navy ships in the Gulf of Tonkin in 1964,Johnson was given carte blanche in the form of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution and sent troops to Vietnam. Antiwar movement within the U.S. gained speed as protesters, hippies, and Americans denounced the war causing low support and troop withdrawal

    In 1963 in Dallas, riding in a parade to drum up support for the upcoming presidential election in 1964, JFK was shot twice by Lee Harvey Oswald and pronounced dead at The Parkland hospital. Lee Harvey Oswald, the supposed assassin of President Kennedy before assassinating Kennedy had defected to Russia and upon returning became a member of a pro-Castro group in America. He never got to stand trial or issue a formal statement before he was murdered.
