Vietnam War Starts (CH. 29: The Vietnam War Era - Sec. 1: Origins of the Vietnam War)
In an effort to contain and prevent the spread of Communism, the U.S accidentally sets foot in what many might say the first war we "lost." One war that many felt we had no right to jump into, the Vietnam war caused around 60,000 U.S casualties. The war was originally supposed to be a civil war between North and South Vietnam, with North being communist based. Since the U.S doesn't approve of communism and fears the Domino Effect, we decided to engage in the war as well. -
Elvis Presley released single: "Blue Suede Shoes"
Blue Suede Shoes was very much the song of choice for everyone, especially in the South. It was ranked #2 on the Memphis Charts for 3 consecutive weeks, and even more credit was achieved after that. At around early to mid-April, approximately one million copies of "Blue Suede Shoes" had been sold, earning Elvis Presley a Gold Record. According to sources, "Blue Suede Shoes" was the first million selling country song to feature both rhythm & blues and pop. -
Hippie Movement
Though there isn't a specific date as to when this new subculture of music and culture originated, many agree that this Hippie Movement had sprouted around early to mid-1960. The subculture mostly consists of secluding oneself from urbanization and most societies and live a life of vegan and free love. They were also involved in anti-war protests. Following this Movement was a new form of music (pyschadelic music) and the drug abuse of LSD. -
Assassination of John F. Kennedy (CH. 28: The Kennedy and Johnson Years - Sec. 2: Kennedy's New Frontier
Born May 29, 1917 in Brookline, MA, American Politician John Fitzgerald Kennedy was our 35th President of the United States. He was the youngest person to be elected to office and the second youngest president. However, his presidency was cut short due to his assassination in Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963 by Lee Harvey Oswald. He passed away at age 46. -
Black Panther Party Formed (CH. 27: The Civil Rights Movement - Sec. 3: New Successes and Challenges
In hopes to keep police brutality and racial based violence at bay, leader Huey P. Newton and his group of Black Americans formed the Black Panther Party. While their true intentions were to help society, many higher authorirites deemed them as threats to the nation and tried to get rid of them. The party lost support over time and dissipated in 1982. -
Assassination of Robert Kennedy
Following the tragic death of older brother John F. Kennedy, 42 year old Robert Kennedy was assassinated in Los Angeles, California. Born on November 20, 1925, in Brookline, Massachusetts with seven other Kennedys, Robert would grow to be one of many of his other siblings to obtain interest in politics and serving the nation. He went from serving the U.S Naval Reserve to serving as a Senator in New York until he was assassinated in 1968. -
U.S Lands on the Moon
With the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union, we the U.S come out on top as the first to deploy live astronauts to the moon. At 2:56 UTC, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin finished their lunar orbit and had landed on the moon. The trip consisted of multiple parts and through multiple trial and errors in the life of Apollo, we finally got it done. The trip consisted of a launch, flight, lunar orbit, and safe return process that was to be followed. -
Watergate Scandal
On June 17, 1972, President Nixon's Administration had broken into the DNC Headquarters in the Watergate Complex located in Washington D.C. When discovered, the administration tried to cover up their deed, but failed due to multiple point sources of evidence that proved the breaking and entering. With Nixon also involved, he had no choice but to step down from his presidential seat. -
Hurricane Carmen Begins
Hurrican Carmen was considered to be one of the most devestating Tropical Cyclones of the hurrican season of 1974. It was originated in Africa and slowly worked its way up to the Caribbean Sea and then to the Gulf of Mexico where it did most of its damage. The hurricane lasted till September 10. -
Vietnam War Ends - Paris Peace Accords
Through a large amount blood and bullets from both the U.S and Vietnam, the elongated war had finally come to end in 1973 through the Paris Peace Accords. The treaty concluded the war with a truce between the U.S and Vietnam. The war resulted in around 60,000 U.S Casualties and 2,500 missing in action. -
Apple is Created
Founded by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne, Apple Inc. hit the ground running when it launched its first Apple I computer kit, which consisted of nothing more than a motherboard and a few video chips for visual aid. When revenues began to double over the years, the company continued to increase mass production as well as develop new products with a better, more technologically advanced infrastructure. In 1956, anyone who bought Apple's shares quickly became multimillonares. -
John Lennon Assassination
At 10:50 p.m., John Lennon arrived at his hotel for the night in New York, called The Dakota. He is stopped by a man by the name of Mark David Chapman nonchalantly waiting at the front door. He pulls out a Charter Arms .38 Special Revolver and unloads his gun into Lennon, who was then taken to Roosevelt Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead on arrival. He was 40 years old.
