Foreign Policy 1805-1810

  • Tripoli Treaty

The United States agreed to a one time payment of $60,000 to the leader of Tripoli and ransom American prisoners of war to make the treaty successful. The treaty also protected American ships from corsair attacks and also stated that both the United States and Tripoli never went to war with each other again. Lastly, it stopped the seizure of American ships from being attacked. This treaty occurred after a long lasting battle/war between the Barbary States of Tripoli and the United States.
  • Non-Importation Act

  • Embargo Act

The Embargo Act of 1807 was issued in response to the presidential efforts to search for an alternative to war. Jefferson reasoned that if America voluntarily cut off its exports, the affected powers would have no choice but to “surrender” and agree to respect their rights. As a result of the embargo, the American economy staggered. Docks were deserted, and peoples were left unemployed/starving. It seemed as though Jefferson was declaring war on his own citizens rather than foreign nations.
