Foreign Policy: NK v. US

  • Korean War-1950-53

    Korean War-1950-53
This event was the starting point of the US/NK rivalry. When North Korea and South Korea split, America sided with and fought with North Korea. America disagreed with North Korea's communism, and to this day they still persist against it. This is the bases of our rivalry.
  • Capturing Ships

    Capturing Ships
In 1968 a North Korean vessel over took the USS Pueblo. The U.N wanted to diffuse tensions between the Korea's, but it turned out to be a diversion so that four North Korea patrol boats could surround the USS Pueblo. North Korea then held 82 members of the ship in Korea for 11 months. The controversy over this was that the US said they were in international waters and North Korea says they had crossed over to their waters.
  • Cutting Down a Tree

    Cutting Down a Tree
A party of South Koreans, 2 American officers, and four American military police wanted to cut down a tree at the DMZ border line for checkpoints of the U.N. It started out harmless and with little care. North Korea then wanted them to, but they refused to do so. This lead to a truck of North Koreans coming and ended with two Americans axed to death. This was the closest they've ever been to going to war since the Korean War. It also affected the American elections that year.
  • The Soviet Union Falls

    The Soviet Union Falls
When the Soviet Union split into it's 15 different nations, it was a good sign for the US, but bad for North Korea. The US viewed it as a win against communism plus an end to the Cold War. North Korea viewed it as an uncertain and a falling future for communism. Kim Il-Sung then invited Jimmy Carter and Billy Graham to North Korea. They denied and their denial to the olive branch further created tensions.
  • Negotiating

    Negotiating
All though this ended not horribly, it still created lots of tensions. While they were in limbo, North Korea went against one of there prior agreements and the death of King Il-Sung was impactful in talking. It took three sessions to talk and come to an agreement. North Korea agreed to freeze nuclear production and the US had to provide specific material while improving both sides relationships with the other. This agreement only lasted a few months as suspicions on both sides were raised again.
  • New Presidents

    New Presidents
In George W. Bushes election speech he called out certain countries for coming in the way of world piece. North Korea had been one of them. They did not take it well and it fractured the small fraction of peace they had. Later that same year, America found out that North Korea had gone against American/Korea agreements and continued with the nuclear engineering, creating further tension between the two nations.
  • Nuclear Mistrust

    Nuclear Mistrust
In 2005 North Korea broke their promise with Us, once again, after promising not to fire or work on nuclear weapons. They were angered by the US and their financial assets in the US. In retaliation North Kore sent seven ballistics missiles and if the missiles had worked, it would've hit Alaska. Thankfully it did not work, but the action left a mark on the countries relationship with each other.
  • The first Nuclear Test (2006-2007)

    The first Nuclear Test (2006-2007)
This first nuclear testing made the tensions strong between the U.N, the U.S, and North Korea. The U.N was alerted to the test and North Korea said that it had to do with "U.S threats". This upset us, and forced North Korea to shut down certain Nuclear facilities. Of course, this created tensions between the three nations because there was disagreement on how to verify North Korea's actions.
  • Japan Missiles

    Japan Missiles
This past year, North Korea launched a missile over Japan, just missing it by a little over 1,000 miles. We are trying have been investigating this, but it has become extremely unclear if this launch was a test or an attack. The unknown of the missile launch has made a big impact on most countries, making us wonder if they are planning on ambushing us with a nuke.
  • Trumps Tweets

    Trumps Tweets
Rhis past year, multiple times, Trump has called King Sung Un out in bad ways upsetting him. First he takes to childish play, nicknameing him "Rocket Man". Then he tells us that all the negotiating we've been working on for the past 25 years that they have ended. He also tells us that there is only one thing we can do, and leaves us at that, saying, later, at a press conference, that we would "find out soon" what he means by the tweet.
