    Atari came out with the Atari 2600 in 1977 in NA. It is credited with popularizing the use of microprocessor-based hardware.
    Magnavox released the Magnavox Odyssey² in 1978 in NA. They succeeded in bringing the first home video game system to market, the Odyssey, which was quickly followed by a number of later models.
    Mattel released the Intellivision in 1980 in NA. Development of the console began in 1978, less than a year after the introduction of its main competitor, the Atari 2600.

    Sega came out with the Game Gear on April 26, 1991 in North America. The handheld shares much of its hardware with the Master System and is able to play its own titles as well as those of the Master System.
