    It was a great purchase. The U.S. bought it for $7.2 million (about 2 cents an acre). People thought it was a terrible buy, but really the land was very rich in timber, minerals, and oil to profit off of.

    U.S.S. Maine was carrying U.S. citizens from Cuba and this explosion was by unknown, but the newspaper claimed Spanish did it, and it enraged U.S. and made it their battle cry for the intervention in Cuba.
