Fetal Development Timeline

  • Week 7

    Week 7
Hands and feet are emerging from developing arms and legs. Technically, your baby is still considered an embryo and has something of a small tail, which is an extension of her tailbone. You'd spot eyelid folds partially covering her peepers, which already have some color, as well as the tip of her nose and tiny veins beneath parchment-thin skin. http://www.babycenter.com/6_your-pregnancy-7-weeks_1096.bc
  • Week 8

    Week 8
Webbed fingers and toes are poking out from your baby's hands and feet, his eyelids practically cover his eyes, breathing tubes extend from his throat to the branches of his developing lungs, and his "tail" is just about gone.

    Week 10
Though he's barely the size of a kumquat — a little over an inch or so long, crown to bottom — and weighs less than a quarter of an ounce, your baby has now completed the most critical portion of his development. He's swallowing fluid and kicking up a storm. Vital organs — including his kidneys, intestines, brain, and liver are in place and starting to function.

  • Week 15

    Week 15
Your growing baby now measures about 4 inches long, crown to rump, and weighs in at about 2 1/2 ounces (about the size of an apple). Although her eyelids are still fused shut, she can sense light. If you shine a flashlight at your tummy, for instance, she's likely to move away from the beam. There's not much for your baby to taste at this point, but she is forming taste buds. http://www.babycenter.com/6_your-pregnancy-15-weeks_1104.bc
  • Week 21

    Week 21
Your baby now weighs about three-quarters of a pound and is approximately 10 1/2 inches long — the length of a carrot. In other developments, your baby's eyebrows and lids are present now, and if you're having a girl, her vagina has begun to form as well. http://www.babycenter.com/6_your-pregnancy-21-weeks_1110.bc
  • Week 24

    Week 24
Your baby's growing steadily, having gained about 4 ounces since last week. His brain is also growing quickly now, and his taste buds are continuing to develop. His skin is still thin and translucent, but that will start to change soon. http://www.babycenter.com/6_your-pregnancy-24-weeks_1113.bc
  • Week 27

    Week 27
She's sleeping and waking at regular intervals, opening and closing her eyes, and perhaps even sucking her fingers. With more brain tissue developing, your baby's brain is very active now. While her lungs are still immature, they would be capable of functioning — with a lot of medical help — if she were to be born now. http://www.babycenter.com/6_your-pregnancy-27-weeks_1116.bc
  • Week 30

    Week 30
Your baby's about 15.7 inches long now, and she weighs almost 3 pounds. Her eyesight continues to develop, though it's not very keen; even after she's born, she'll keep her eyes closed for a good part of the day. She'll respond to changes in light but will have 20/400 vision. http://www.babycenter.com/6_your-pregnancy-30-weeks_1119.bc
  • Week 33

    Week 33
This week your baby weighs a little over 4 pounds and has passed the 17-inch mark. He's rapidly losing that wrinkled, alien look and his skeleton is hardening. The bones in his skull aren't fused together, which allows them to move and slightly overlap, thus making it easier for him to fit through the birth canal.

  • Week 37

    Week 37
Your baby is now considered "full term," even though your due date is three weeks away. If you go into labor now, his lungs will likely be mature enough to fully adjust to life outside the womb. Your baby weighs 6 1/3 pounds and measures a bit over 19 inches, head to heel.
