Fetal Development Timeline

  • week 7

    week 7
Hands and feet are emerging from developing arms and legs is still considered an embryo and has something of a small tail, which is an extension of her tailbone. The tail will disappear within a few weeks. It has doubled in size since last week and now measures half an inch long, about the size of a blueberry. The brain is growing and it's liver is churning blood.http://www.babycenter.com/6_your-pregnancy-7-weeks_1096.bc (this is my information source)

    week 9
It is nearly an inch long about the size of a grape and weighs just a fraction of an ounce. The baby's heart finishes dividing into four chambers and there teeth start to form. The embryonic "tail" is completely gone. The baby's organs, muscles, and nerves are kicking into gear. The external sex organs are there but won't be distinguishable for another few weeks. It's eyes are fully formed, but it's eyelids are fused shut.http://www.babycenter.com/6_your-pregnancy-9-weeks_1098.bc
  • week 11

    week 11
The baby is just over 1 1/2 inches long and about the size of a fig, is now almost fully formed. It's hands hands will soon open and close into fists, tiny tooth buds are beginning to appear under her gums, and some of the babys bones are beginning to harden. It's starting to kick and stretch and it's diaphragm is forming.http://www.babycenter.com/6_your-pregnancy-11-weeks_1100.bc
  • week 13

    week 13
Fingerprints have formed her veins and organs are clearly visible through it's still-thin skin, and the babys body is starting to catch up with it's head which makes up just a third of it's body size now. If it's a girl, she now has more than 2 million eggs in her ovaries. The baby is almost 3 inches long (the size of a medium shrimp) and weighs nearly an ounce.http://www.babycenter.com/6_your-pregnancy-13-weeks_1102.bc
  • week 17

    week 17
The baby's skeleton is changing from soft cartilage to bone, and the umbilical cord it's lifeline to the placenta is growing stronger and thicker. The baby weighs 5 ounces now (about as much as a turnip), and it's around 5 inches long from head to bottom. The baby can move it's joints, and it's sweat glands are starting to develop.http://www.babycenter.com/6_your-pregnancy-17-weeks_1106.bc
  • week 23

    week 23
The babys sense of movement well devel by now. It's more than 11 inches long and weighs just over a pound (about as much as a large mango).Blood vessels in it's lungs are developing to prepare for breathing, and the sounds that the babys increasingly keen ears pick up are preparing it for entry into the outside world. http://www.babycenter.com/6_your-pregnancy-23-weeks_1112.bc
  • week 28

    week 28
The baby weighs two and a quarter pounds (like a Chinese cabbage) and measures 14.8 inches from the top of it's head to it's heels. It can blink it's eyes, which now sport lashes. With the babys eyesight developing, it may be able to see the light that filters in through the womb. It's also developing billions of neurons in it's brain and adding more body fat in preparation for life in the outside world.http://www.babycenter.com/6_your-pregnancy-28-weeks_1117.bc
  • week 30

    week 30
The baby about 15.7 inches long now, and weighs almost 3 pounds (like a head of cabbage). A pint and a half of amniotic fluid surrounds it, but that volume will decrease as it gets bigger and takes up more room in the womans uterus. It's eyesight continues to develop, though it's not very keen; even after it's born, it will keep it's eyes closed for a good part of the day. When it does open them, it will respond to changes in light.http://www.babycenter.com/6_your-pregnancy-30-weeks_1119.bc
  • week 33

    week 33
This week thr baby weighs a little over 4 pounds and has passed the 17-inch mark. It's rapidly losing that wrinkled, alien look and his skeleton is hardening. The bones in his skull aren't fused together, which allows them to move and slightly overlap, thus making it easier for it to fit through the birth canal. These bones don't entirely fuse until early adulthood.http://www.babycenter.com/6_your-pregnancy-33-weeks_1122.bc

    week 40
It's hard to say for sure how big the baby will be, but the average newborn weighs about 7 1/2 pounds (a small pumpkin) and is about 20 inches long. It's skull bones are not yet fused, which allows them to overlap a bit if it's a snug fit through the birth canal during labor. This so-called "molding" is the reason the baby's head may look a little conehead-ish after birth.http://www.babycenter.com/6_your-pregnancy-40-weeks_1129.bc
