Fetal Development Timeline

  • Week 6

    Week 6
Your baby's jaw, cheeks, chin, eyes, ears, and nose are beginning to form what will eventually become one adorable face. In addition, her kidneys, liver, and lungs are developing, and her heart is now beating 80 times a minute (and getting faster every day). All this and she's still no bigger than the length of a nail head (about a quarter of an inch) from crown to rump!http://www.whattoexpect.com/pregnancy/week-by-week/week-6.aspx
  • Week 9

    Week 9
Your baby, now the size of a green olive, has grown about an inch since last week. Tiny muscles are beginning to form,he's gearing up to move his arms and legs. It's still too soon to feel anything in your belly, but you might be able to hear something at your next checkup. Try listening for your baby's heartbeat via a Doppler device — that welcome sound should be audible anytime now.http://www.whattoexpect.com/pregnancy/week-by-week/week-9.aspx#
  • Week 12

    Week 12
By now, your baby weighs a full half-ounce and is about the size of a large plum. Most of his systems are in place, though there's still plenty of maturing to do. For one thing, his fetal digestive system is beginning to practice contraction movements necessary for eating, and his bone marrow is busy making white blood cells — weapons against germs once he's out of your safe haven. The pituitary gland has started producing the hormones.http://www.whattoexpect.com/pregnancy/week-by-week/week-12.a
  • Week 16

    Week 16
Your baby now weighs in at three to five ounces, and he's four to five inches long. The bones that are now in place in his ears means he can probably hear your voice. While he’s getting used to your voice, the tiny muscles in his body, mainly the ones in his back, are gaining strength, so he can straighten more. Thanks to his developing facial muscles, your baby is capable of making frowns, and squints. His eyelids now working as too.http://www.whattoexpect.com/pregnancy/week-by-week/week-16.asp
  • Week 20

    Week 20
Your second trimester ultrasound, scheduled for between weeks 18 and 22, gives your practitioner a chance to see things are now. The gir's uterus is now fully formed and her ovaries are holding about seven million primitive eggs. The boy's testicles have begun their descent from the abdomen to their ultimate destination the scrotum. The baby weighs 10 ounces and measures 6.5 in, it can now twist and turn.http://www.whattoexpect.com/pregnancy/20-weeks-pregnant.aspx
  • Week 24

    Week 24
Your baby is about eight and a half inches long and weighs one and a half pounds, gaining steadily at about 6 ounces per week. Much of that weight comes from accumulating baby fat, as well as from growing organs, bones, and muscle. The ears are getting sharper and it can hear very loud sounds. By now, the face is almost fully formed, complete with eyelashes, eyebrows, and hair. The locks are white and their is no pigment.http://www.whattoexpect.com/pregnancy/week-by-week/week-24.aspx
  • Week 26

    Week 26
The baby now weighs a full two pounds and measures nine-plus inches. And this week, its eyes, which until now were developing under fused eyelids, start to open. Of course, there's not much to see in there, but if your baby spots a bright light (or hears a loud noise) near your belly, you may notice an increase in fetal activity. Her brain is more developed and sophisticated as well.http://www.whattoexpect.com/pregnancy/week-by-week/week-26.aspx
  • Week 30

    Week 30
Your increasing belly size shows that your baby is getting bigger every day, weighing in at over three pounds (he'll be gaining weight at a rate of half a pound per week for the next seven weeks). Also growing daily is his brain, which is looking like the real thing with grooves and wrinkles. And now that your baby can regulate his own body temperature, he'll start shedding lanugo, the downy body hair that's been keeping him warm.http://www.whattoexpect.com/pregnancy/week-by-week/week-30.aspx
  • Week 34

    Week 34
Your baby is clocking in at five pounds and could be as tall as 20 inches by now, and the vernix is getting thicker. This week, a boy's testicles start making their way down to their final destination: his scrotum. While about three to four percent of boys are born with undescended testicles, they usually head downtown before a year. The fingernails have reached the tip by now and are readying for the postpartum manicure.http://www.whattoexpect.com/pregnancy/week-by-week/week-34.aspx
  • Week 38

    Week 38
The baby is weighing close to seven pounds and measuring 20 inches long. Fetal development is nearly complete as your baby tends to shedding the skin-protecting vernix and lanugo. He's also producing more surfactant, a substance that prevents the air sacs in his lungs from sticking to one another once he starts to breathe. He’s continuing to add fat and fine-tuning his brain so he can deal with later simulation.http://www.whattoexpect.com/pregnancy/week-by-week/week-38.aspx
