Fetal Development , Month by Month

  • Month 1

    Month 1
    The size at two weeks would be equal to the size of a pin head. The egg starts to attach to the lining of the uterus. This is a criticial stage for brain and spinal cord development. Internal organs and circulatory system are beggining to form. The heart begings to beat.
  • Month 2

    Month 2
    The size is about 1/4 inches (6mm) The face , eyes , ears and limbs are beging to take shape. The bones begin to form in this month.
  • Month 3

    Month 3
    The size is about one inch (25mm) long as month begings. The nostrils , mouth , lips , teeth buds , and eyelids are begining to form. The fingers and toes are almost completely formned. All organs present , although immature.
  • Month 4

    Month 4
    The size is about 3 inches , (7.6mm) long as month begins. One ounce (28g) as month begins. The fetal can now suck on its thumb , swallow , hiccup , and move around. Facial features are becoming more clearer.
  • Month 5

    Month 5
    The size is about 6 1/2 to 7 inches (16 - 18cm) long , about 4-5 ounces (113-142g) The hair , eyelashes and eyebrows appear. The teeth are continuing to develop. Organs are maturing , and the fetal becomes more active.
  • Month 6

    Month 6
    The size is about 8 - 10 inches , about 8 - 12 ounces , The fat deposits under skin but fetus appears wrinkled. The breathing movements is begining to improve.
  • Month 7

    Month 7
    The size is about 8 - 10 inches (25-31cm) long , about 1 1/2 pounds (680-907g) Periods of activity are now followed by periods of rest and quiet.
  • Month 8

    Month 8
    The size is about 14 - 16 inches long about 2 1/2 - 3 pounds as month begings. The weight gain continues rapidly throught this month and after. May react to loud noises with a reflex jerking action. Is starting to move into a head-down position.
  • Month 9

    Month 9
    The size is about 17 - 18 inches long , 5 - 6 pounds as month begings . Weight gain cotinues until the week before birth. Skin becomes smooth as fat deposits continue. Movements decrease as the fetus has less room to move around. Acquires disease - fighting antibodies from the mother's blood. Descends into pelvis , ready for birth.
