The main materials were Spitalfields silk and Honiton lace and it was adorned with orange blossoms. The project was executed by designer Sir Norman Hartnell and 350 embroiderers at his Mayfair fashion house.
It was unique as it was a custom bridal dress inspired by Bottecelli's painting Primavera (1482) and meant to symbolise "rebirth and growth" in Britain after WWII. The bodice and full skirts had 10,000 pearls. It was a temporary project as the designing and stitching had a three month period to be completed by the wedding date.

This dress was designed by Elizabeth and David Emanuel, the design and construction of this dress and the backup dress was kept tightly guarded. The dress was embroidered with 10,000 pearls, and also had the longest train in royal history at 25 feet, it also had a square of lace that belonged to Queen Mary sewn onto it.
