  • Trail of Tears

    After Congress passed the removal act in 1830 they were forced on a march of thousands of miles to established Indian territory. Many Native Americans succumbed to death.
  • Potato Famine

    Almost 500,000 Irish immigrated to the U.S. due to the famine
  • Mexican-American War

    The U.S. wins the war acquiring the territory and it's citizens
  • Dred Scott V. Sandford

    Scott, who was a former slave, sued his former master in federal courts under the determination he had become a free slave because his master voluntarily took him to a free slave state.
  • Homestead Act of 1862

    "allows for any individual, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or country of origin, over the age of 21 or head of household to claim up to 160 acres of free land if they have lived on it for five years and made the required agricultural improvements"
  • Civil Rights Act of 1866

    All persons born or naturalized in the United States were declared citizens of the US and the states they resided.
  • The 14th Amendment

    Allows African Americans to be citizens
  • The Spanish-American War

    The end of this war saw the U.S acquiring Puerto Rico and Guam and their citizens
  • World War I

    The U.S. enters into the war, posing a lot of hatred towards Germans
  • Native Americans

    President Coolidge signed a law into affect granting Native Americans their citizenship
  • Pearl Harbor

    Due to national security risks Japanese were round up and incarcerated, and treated harshly
  • Magnuson Act of 1943

    This act allows Chinese immigrants eligibility for citizenship
  • Brown V. Topeka Board of Education

    Supreme Court rules "separate but equal," educational facilities are unconstitutional.
  • The Immigration and Reform Act

    Legalizes all illegal aliens living in the U.S since 1982
