Evolution of gaming consoles

  • The "Brown Box"

    The first game console that works on a standard television. Created by television engineer Ralph Baer and his co workers. It uses a vacuum-tube circuit and the first game allows the player to control two squares that chase each other.
  • Magnavox Odyssey

    First commercial video-game console. The console uses six cartridges to play 12 games. The games involve dots and lines.
  • Pong

    The first at home console that gains popularity and is widely purchased. A single chip creates an on screen score and a sound that is made when the ball hits the paddle.
  • Atari 2600

    The first console that allows the player to play multiple games. This console feaured famous games such as Space Invaders, Missle Command, and Combat.
  • Intellivision

    The Intellivision has better graphics than its rival, the Atari 2600. It also features the first synthesized voices in a video game.
  • Nintendo Entertainment System

    Served as a popular console that housed games such as Super Mario Bros. , Metroid, and the Legend of Zelda. Climbed its way to the top as the best selling console in video game history.
  • Game Boy

    The first hand held console. Features included an 8-bit cpu similar to the NES and a black and white LCD screen.
  • Neo-Geo

    Features a 24-bit cpu that is years ahead of rivaling game consoles, and 2-D graphics. Made arcade quality games available at home, but the overly expensive price diminished sales.
  • Super NES

    Nintendos follow up to the NES, a 16-bit console that is a major hit across the country.
  • Playstation

    The most popular console of the 32-bit era. This console was the first that featured three dimensional gameplay. It was also one of the first consoles to utilize CD-Rom technology.
  • Nintendo 64

    The 64 was the last system to use cartridges. The convienence of cartridges out shined the Playstations CD technology, making games load faster and memory to be stored easily.
  • Playstation 2

    The first 128-bit system. A drastic change to previous consoles in the past, it can also be used as a DVD player.
  • Xbox

    Microsofts first attempt to make a console. PC technology allows for smoother and faster gameplay as opposed to the Playstation 2.
  • Game Boy Advance

    Known for its LCD Screen that could display over 32,000 colors.
  • Nintendo DS

    The first hand held device to feature dual screens like a PDA or tablet.
  • Playstation Portable

    Playstations first attempt at a hand held device. The PSP features wireless capability, high quality graphics, as well as functions like photo and music storage.
