Evolution of Diet Culture

  • Introduction

    This timeline is showing the evolution of diets. Dieting has been important since the 1940s. However, it has been forever changing based on the body ideals in society at the time. I am showing different advertisements in different eras of time. There is a drastic difference in the types of bodies women want to achieve in different periods of time. Dieting brands prey on insecurities of women and use idealized models in their ads in order to sell their products.

    This is an advertisement from the 1940s that is promising weight gain. Basically this is the complete opposite of the 2015 ad. Again, this is profiting off of people's insecurities. The diet fads during this time were supposedly causing women to gain weight in order to be accepted.

    This 1970s ad is encouraging ways to lose weight. This is extremely unhealthy and is claiming sugar keeps appetite down. During this time, the ad is promising weight loss, which was important during that period of time.

    This ad is marketing their weight loss products by indicating their product was the reason the girl has that specific body. The ad is preying on people's insecurities in order to sell their product. It corresponds with the wanting to look skinny, which is the ideal during that area.

    Khloe Kardashian's Ad Scandal
    Khloe Kardashian posted a brand deal ad on Twitter and quickly received back lash. She credited weight loss shakes for the way her body looks. The weight loss shakes know people want to look like Khloe, therefore they could profit by paying her to put out an ad. The picture also shows some backlash she received from posting it and people calling her out for lying.
