Foundation of College
"Harvard College was the first higher education institution in the United States, and is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts" (Sass, 2016). This school is the foundation for all Universities around the United States. Today, society is aware of the intense challenges there are to become accepted at Harvard University. Rigorous curriculum will allow students to become successful and allows them to create an opportunity to attend Harvard. -
Foundation of Printing Press
"The first printing press in the American Colonies was set up at Harvard College" (Sass, 2016). This is an significant event, because today curriculum is dependent on printing. There may be long-term effects in the future, because eventually schools may want to become 100% paper free. However, this will allow schools to save money as well as allow 21st Century learners to follow the current electrical trend. -
College of William and Mary
College of William and Mary was established in Virginia, and is the second college to open in colonial America. "William & Mary has been called "the Alma Mater of the Nation" because of its close ties to America's founding fathers. A 17-year-old George Washington received his surveyor's license through W&M and would return as its first American chancellor. Thomas Jefferson received his undergraduate education here, as did presidents John Tyler and James Monroe" (William & Mary, 2017). -
14th Amendment
According to Sass (2016) "the 14th Amendment was passed by Congress as one of the reconstruction amendments. It allows all persons born, or naturalized in the United States citizenship, and equal protection under the law". This Amendment allows everyone to be treated as equal for civil rights. This Amendment has impacted me today as a teacher and will impact me in the future as counselor as well. I am able to teach in a diverse school because of this law. -
Department of Education
The Department of Education "was created in order to help states establish effective school systems. The department has never strayed far from what would become its official mission: to promote students achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access" (Sass, 2016). Today schools are successful, because the Department of Education is able to assist within the states effectively. -
College interest Test
The first ACT test was admitted. This test allowed colleges to gain knowledge if a student has college and career readiness standards. According to Sass (2016) "ACT now offers more than 20 programs and services, providing support for all of life’s transitions from Kindergarten through Career continuum". Students must study for the this intensive exam to become accepted in college. As a school counselor, I must emphasize to students the importance of this exam. -
Higher Education Act
"The Higher Education Act is signed at Southwest Texas State College. It increased federal aid to higher education and provided scholarships, student loans, and established a National Teachers Corps" (Sass, 2016). Students attending college were given opportunities for higher education financially. In the future, I can offer and announce to students the many scholarships opportunities there given for college. -
First "Online Campus"
Sass (2016) found the following, "the University of Phoenix established their "online campus," and the first to offer online bachelor's and master's degrees". It becomes the "largest private university in North America." Today online campus has expanded throughout the United States and is not just limited the University of Phoenix. -
The Higher Education Act Revised
This act "again is amended and reauthorized, expanding access to higher education for low and middle income students, providing additional funds for graduate studies, and increasing accountability" (Sass, 2016). I can use this act personally to my studies, also applies for college students who can not afford college. -
Educational Programs
"President Barack Obama signed the 1.1-trillion dollar bipartisan budget bill. The bill restores some, but not all, of the cuts to federal education programs that resulted from sequestration. It is the first budget to- be- agreed to by our divided government since 2009!" (Sass, 2016). Educational programs are especially important as a teacher as well as a counselor, because we are able to use these programs for our students to succeed. -
