  • Chinese Revolution

    Chinese Revolution
    On October 1st, 1949 Moa Zedong created the Peoples Republic of China. The announcement of the PRC ended the civil war between the nationalist and communists. After the civil war the USA had suspended its diplomatic ties with the new communist China.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    On June 25th, 1950 North Korean leader, Kim Il-sung launched a suprise attack on South Korea. On June 30th US forces went into South Korea and took back the South Korean Captial of Seoul. At the end of the year China had intervined and helped North Korea. The UN forces retreated to the Pusan perimeter and then fight back across South Korea back to the 38th parallel. Cease-fire was signed on July 27, 1953
  • Hungary Uprising part 2

    Russia was outraged at this statement and sent hundreds of tanks and 30,000 people died. On November 14th Soviets had regained order. The US only gave moral support.

    On October 23rd, 1956, students and works went to the streets in Budapest and issused their Sixteen Points. These points allowed the people more personal freedoms, removal of secret police, the removal of Russian control, more food, ect... In 1956 Poland had gained their rights by protesting in the streets, so Hungary followed. Imre Nagy was appointed prime minister and on OCtober 31st Nagy stated that Hungary would withdraw from the warsaw pact.

    Sputnik launched (and the space race)
    On October 4th, 1957 the USSR launched its first satellite. On November 3rd, 1957 the USSR launched Sputnik II, which had a dog inside of it. On January 31st, 1958 the US answers back with the Explorer I whiched discovered the maginetic fields around Earth. In July of 1958 the US created NASA.

    On May 1st, 1960 a U2 spy plane disappeared over Russia.

    On the night of August 13th, 1961 the berlin wall, which sepreted East from West German was build over night. East Germany was considered an economic miracle, while it was the oppisite for the West. This wall was built to keep civilzians from the West to stay or risk dying trying to get to East Germany.

    On October 15th, 1962 a U2 spy plane took a photo of nuclear missiles under construction in Cuba. This lead to very high tensions between the US and Russia. In July of 1963 the US and Russia signed the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.
  • Uprisings in Czechoslovakia

    Uprisings in Czechoslovakia
    In 1968 a man named Alexander Dubcek, the communist party leader, overthrew Novotny, the old party leader. On Augest 20th, 1968 troops from Russia, Hungary, Bulgaria, East Germany, and Poland occupied Czechoslovakia. Anybody who initiated the liberal reforms was taken, in secret, and was forced to sign a treaty letting Soviet troops to be stationed in Czech.
  • Russia invades Afghanistan

    Russia invades Afghanistan
    On Christmas of 1979 Russian paratroopers landed in Kabal, Afaghanistan. On December 27th Amin, communist leader, was shot by Russians. After Amin was shot the Russians put Babrak Kamal in power, but most of the Afgan Military deserted to the Mujahdeen. By 1982 the Mujahdeen was in control of 75% of Afgan. America stopped trade, SALT talks, and boycotted the Oymplics in the 1980's, which was to be held in Russia.
