    The Marshall Plan
    The Marshall Plan was General Goerge Marshalls idea of giving aid to European nations. In return they had to agree to trade with eachother. This helped stop the spread of communism.
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    The Soviet Union cut off supplies to West Berlin thinking they would be able to take control of all of Berlin. The people of West Berlin would have starved. America and British planes started air lifting food and supplies and dropping them over the city of West Berlin. They did this constantly for 327 days untill the Soviets lifted the blockade.

    The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was an aliance between the United States and 11 other countries. They all agread that if one of them were attacked the others will help them. This aliance made us bigger and stronger then the Soviet Union.
  • Start of the Korean War

    Start of the Korean War
    After tension grew between North and South Korea, on June 25, 1950 the North blew up and started to attack the South. There primary goal was to capture Port of Pusan. The U.N. decided to come to take action and not to long later U.S. and british troops overwelmed North Korea. North Korea retreated into China where they were backed up by 300,000 Chinese troops. On July 27th 1953 an armistis was declared and the Korean War was over.

    The Warsaw Pact was a military alliance between the Soviet Union and other communist eastern Europian nations. They did this after western Germany joined NATO.

    The Soviets and the United Satates were in a race to see who would get into space first. Sputnik was the first satelite launched into space by the Soviet Union.

    The U.S. thought that Cuba was going to convert to communist, so America took action and tried to get the people of Cuba to overthrough their new leader Fidel Castro. After time went passed, the U.S. started to do air raids and landed troops on Cuba.

    The Berlin Wall was a wall built to serparate communist East Berlin from West Berlin and the cut off the flow of refuges trying to get out of West Berlin.

    The United States found out that the Soviet Union was putting nuclear weapons on Cuba. For 6 days people were afraid that a nuclear war would breack out between the United States and Russa. Finally the Soviets decided to remove their weapons from Cuba as long as the United States didn't invade Cuba.

    Kind of like the Korean war, the U.S. was helping the people of South Vietnam fight against communism. Vietnam was the first televised war. The people of the United states did not want us in this war.

    The Six day war was a war against Israel and Egypt after a long pirod of tension between the two Eygpt won and took control of the Gaza Stip.

    U.S. sends man to Moon
    The United States was the first country to put a man on the moon. The whole nation watched on television as Neil Armstrong walked on the moon and said the famous words "Thats one small step for man, and one giant leap for man kind". This showed the United States space program was more advanced than Russias.

    1980 Olympic Hockey Game
    Also known as "Miracle on Ice", this is when the United States Olympic hockey team defeated Russias hockey team and went on to win the gold medal. The U.S. team was made up of all ameture and college players while Russias team were all pros and dominated the sport. This was a huge morale boost for America.

    The fall of the Soviet Union started when Mikhail Gorbachev took power. He changed alot of the way the old Russia was governed by being able to openly discuss social problems (Glasnost) and economic and bureaucratic restructuring (perestroika). This helped end the Cold War and made Russia and the United States get along better.

    German Reunification/Fall of Berlin Wall
    After Gorbachev took office there were alot of changes in the way Russia was governed. He encouraged more democracy. He took away border guards and said that people were free to cross the border. People immediately started tearing the wall down. This was also showing an end to the Cold War.
