  • The Truamn Doctrine

    The Truamn Doctrine
    US would support Greece and Turkey to prevent them from being taken over by Communism. Often considered the start of the Cold War.
  • The Marshall Plan

    The Marshall Plan
    American program to aid Europe at the end of WW2 to prevent spread of communism. Offered the same aid to Soviets & their allies but they didn't accept.
  • Berlin Airlift

    Brought food and other needed supplies into West Berlin.
  • Creation of NATO

    Creation of NATO
    Military alliance.
  • The Korean War

    The Korean War
    War between South and North Korea; communism vs. democracy. Border issues at the 38th parallel. Lasted about 3 years.
  • Creation of the Warsaw Pact

    Creation of the Warsaw Pact
    Defense treaty between 8 communist states of Europe. It wa a military reaction to NATO integrating West Germany.
  • Vietnam War

    Vietnam War
    Ended April 30th, 1975. Fought between North and South Vietnam (communists vs. anti-communists). North Vietnam wins, South Vietnam gets annexed by the North. Communist governments take power.
  • Soviets launch Sputnik

    Soviets launch Sputnik
    World's first satellite is launched into space. Marked the start of the US-USSR space race.
  • Bay of Pigs

    Bay of Pigs
    US and Cuban exiles launched an unsucessful attack on Cuba
  • Berlin Wall goes Up

    Berlin Wall goes Up
    Wall was built overnight to divide East and West Germany. People could no longer communicate with the opposite side. Whatever side you went to sleep on during that night, you were stuck there.
  • Cuban Missle Crisis

    Cuban Missle Crisis
    Cold War became close to being a nuclear conflict, due to Soviet's putting missles/sites on Cuba to prevent invasions (like Bay of Pigs). US considered attacking Cuba, but quarantined it instead. If US agreed to never invade Cuba again, Cuba/USSR agreed to remove the missle sites.
  • The 6 day war

    Arab-Israeli war. Fougt between Israel, Jordan, Syria, and te United Arab Republic. Israel wins and it leads to territorial changes.
  • US sends man to the moon

    Armstrong is the first American man to walk on the moon (1969, along with Buzz Aldrin). Mission name Apollo 11.
  • Detente

    A period of relaxation during the Cold War. All the fighting parties just needed a break from all the horrors. They all tried to gradually ease the tension.
  • US invades Grenada

    Codenamed Operation Urgent Fury. US led invasion against Grenada-a carribean island. Very controversial. US victory. The date of the invasion is now called Tanksgiving Day (in Grenada).
  • German Reunification/Fall of Berlin Wall

    German Reunification/Fall of Berlin Wall
    Wall was created to keep Germans from fleeing the country. Led to east Germany and West Germany. After it came down it unified into just Germany again.
  • Fall of the Soviet Union

    Fall of the Soviet Union
    Led to 15 Republics of the Soviet Union. Marked the end of the Cold War.
