  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan
    It aided European countries by giving them money after WWII to stop the spread of Communism. It wanted to allow Europe to become modernized and able to grow.
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    The USSR restricted entrance into Berlin by land and water, which left only air to deliver necessities like food and fuel to the citizens of West Berlin. They provided 4700 tons a day.
  • NATO Creation

    NATO Creation
    The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) made it so if one of the 28 countries signed up for it and were attacked by an external enemy, all of them would retaliate.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    America recieved South Korea from WWII while the USSR recieved North Korea split along the 38th parallel. The north became communist while the south became democratic. Tension was building after talks about the reunification of the Korean Peninsula, but on this date northern troops invaded south korea. International forces aided the south and pushed the north back near China. China aided the north and pushed the south back to the 38th parallel with minimal exchange of land.
  • Hydrogen Bomb Testing

    Hydrogen Bomb Testing
    It was thought to be unneeded until the soviets detonated their first atomic bomb, when Harry Truman ordered the creation of it. It created a 3 mile wide fireball and destroyed the island of Elugelab (which it was positioned on) and parts of its surrounding islands when it was detonated.
  • Warsaw Pact Creation

    Warsaw Pact Creation
    It was a mutual defense for the currently 8 communist countries. It was much like NATO but for Communistic countries where they wanted to stop invasions on their territories. It also created buffer states to slow an invasion if it did come.
  • Vietnam War

    Much like Korea, Vietnam was split into a north and a south where the north was communisitic and the south was democratic. It is the first war that was publicly televised. The violence also was carried over into Cambodia and Laos.
  • Bay of Pigs

    Bay of Pigs
    It was the unsuccessful military invasion of Cuba. The CIA funded a rebel group to try and overthrow Cuba's current president. They accomplished that, but they put in Castro who developed ties with the Soviets. President Eisenhower gave the CIA $13 million to overthrow Castro. After a few days the Cuban army easily pushed the Americans out and defended against the attack.
  • Berlin Wall Creation

    Berlin Wall Creation
    Created to seperate east communistic Berlin and western democratic Berlin. It had guard towers, concrete walls, and anti-vehicle trenches. It restricted their movement. It symbolized the Iron Curtain which Churchhill said to demonstrate the cold war.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    The soviet union planned on putting nuclear missiles into cuba which could reach most of the contiental united states. With the use of an aircraft the united states was able to see the construction of midium and intermediate range ballistic nuclear missiles. The U.S. then decided to make a blockade around Cuba. The U.S. and the Soviets agreed upon this arrangement, the Soviets have to dismantle the nuclear missiles going to cuba in exchange for U.S. missiles in Turkey and Italy.
  • Six Day War

    Isreal intiated a suprise attacks against Egyption air fields. Egypt as well as it's neighboring countries of Jordan and Syria decided to aid Egypt. Surprisingly Israel won and gained control of the Gaza Strip, Sinai Peninsula, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights.
  • Man on the Moon

    Man on the Moon
    During the space race both the Soviet Union and the U.S. rushed to try and put the first man on the moon. President Kennedy said that the U.S. would send a man to the moon by the end of the 1960's. The U.S. employed over 400,000 people to help beat the Soviet Union to this. The U.S. beat the Soviets to the moon and in return were able to show off their supremacy over the other through scientific discovery and exploration without actual combat.
  • Miracle on Ice

    Miracle on Ice
    Herb Brooks amatauer team defeated the old experienced Soviet team which won most of the worlds championships and Olympics since 1954. The American team was the underdog, but they pulled through to win gold after a close 4-3 victory. With the Soviets receiving silver, but they were so mad that they didn't come back to get their names engraved on the metals which most people do get done.
  • Fall of the Berlin Wall

    Fall of the Berlin Wall
    Allowed free access between east and west Berlin after nearly 30 years.
  • Collapse of Soviet Union

    Collapse of Soviet Union
    This marked the end of the Cold War after Gorbachev gave power to the Russian president Yeltsin. Shortly afterwards 11 countries succeeded from the Soviet Union following what Lithuania did.
