    French and Indian War

    The French fought against Britain for part of North America and the Ohio River Valley. Both countries wanted natural resources found in this region. Britain claimed they were protecting the colonists and the colonists fell for it, but they were just being used for their money. Colonists helped fight with Britain; they were allies. Britain won and the Proclamation Line kept Colonists being able to move West. This line was also trying to prevent a war between Indians and Colonists.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    Britain had lost a lot of money during the war; Britain taxed the colonists to pay for their debt. The Sugar Act were taxes that the colonists had to pay when importing sugar and molasses. Patriots started protesting saying No Taxation Without Representation, and also started boycotting British products. The loyalists believed that Britain had a good reason to tax them; they paid the taxes. Britain issued the Declaratory Acts saying Parliament could make laws and colonists had no say.

    The Stamp Act was when the Colonists had to pay for stamps whenever they bought paper items. Britain had lost a lot of money during the war; they still taxed the colonists to pay for their debt. Patriots started protesting saying no taxation without representation, and also started boycotting British products.The loyalists believed that Britain had a good reason to tax them; they paid the taxes. Britain issued the Declaratory Acts saying Parliament could make laws and colonists had no say.

    Townshend Act
    The Townshend Act was more taxes that the colonists had to pay. The taxes were on imported glass, lead, paints, paper, and tea. Britain needed the colonists to pay these taxes to keep paying for the war but also for the governors in the colonies. The patriots boycotted British goods, gained support from new colonies, created Sons of Liberty and attacked the tax collectors houses chanting. The loyalists payed the taxes. Britain sent more troops and shut down Massachusetts Legislature.

    Boston Massacre
    The Boston Massacre was when the patriots were getting tired of all the laws and taxes that Britain put on them. The patriots started protesting causing the soldiers to start shooting killing 5 people. The loyalists would've thought patriots caused this awful massacre. In response, Britain removed all troops from the colonies to prevent another massacre. Paul Revere made a painting showing soldiers killing the innocent looking patriots because he wanted more colonists to become patriots.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    Patriots dressed up as Native Americans and dumped 342 crates of Britain's Tea into the Boston Harbor. The colonists did this because they didn't want the tax on tea. Loyalists were upset with the patriots because Britain had taken away all other taxes; Britain sent troops back to the colonies and shut down the Boston Harbor. The colonists had to pay back Britain which was equal to $1 million in U.S. money. The colonists were stuck because they couldn't make money through imports and exports.

    Intolerable Acts
    The Intolerable Acts were a set of laws created to punish the colonists for the Boston Tea Party and show the other colonies not to go crazy. The Intolerable Acts were different laws keeping the colonists from making money and having group meetings. This was supposed to effect the colonists, but it majorly effected Britain because it brought the patriots and some loyalists together. Some loyalists realized there was a problem with Britain which changed their mind about being loyal to Britain.

    First Continental Congress

    The Continental Congress was when 12 out of the 13 colonies got together to talk about the Intolerable Acts. The cause for this was because Britain was making unfair laws. Patriots lead this and tried to get an army together to defend themselves against Britain. Some loyalists attended the meeting because they were afraid of what could happen to them. The congress sent King George a letter about rights the colonists wanted, but he denied it and sent troops to the colonies to take all weapons.
