Events leading up to the American Revolution and Events During the Revolution

  • French and Indian War ends

    The treaty of Paris ended the war. England had massive territorial gains in North America from it.
  • Navigation Acts

    Imposed restrictions on colonial trade. All of the colonies imports had to be bought from England. This led to the American Revolution.
  • Stamp Act

    In an attempt to pay off debts and to defend newly acquired lands, the British taxed paper products on the American colonists.
  • Boston Massacre

    Patriots protesting the British occupation aggravated Captain Thomas Preston and his group. The group fired shots into the mob killing 5, most notably Crispus Attucks.
  • Tea Act

    In order to save the troubled enterprise, the British Parliament passed the Tea Act which allowed the tea companies to ship tea directly to the colonies.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Colonists started a political protest at Griffin’s Wharf in Boston, Massachusetts. The group dumped 342 crates of tea into the harbor.
  • Coercive/ Intolerable Acts

    4 laws passed by the British as a result of the Boston Tea Party
  • First Continental Congress

    Delegates from every state besides Georgia met and discussed the Coercive acts. They agreed to boycott British goods.
  • Lexington and Concord

    The colonists were fed up with the British. 73 British soldiers were killed, 174 were wounded, and 26 were missing while the colonists lost minutemen.
  • Second Continental Congress

    They discussed how they were to fight the British, and created the Continental Army as a result.
  • Declaration of Independence adopted

    American colonists wanted to end England ruling over them. The British did not take too kindly and the Revolution occurred.

    Battle of Saratoga

    Caused by Burgoyne moving his troops to flank the Continental Army. It was a drastic loss for the British Army suffering double the casualties.

    Winter at Valley Forge

    Of the 11,000 soldiers stationed here, hundreds died from disease. They only stayed because of loyalty to the Patriot and because George Washington was there.

    Battle of Yorktown

    George Washington begins the siege starting this war. Washington’s army surrounds the British army who ends up surrendering. This was the most important land battle of the war.

    Official Constitution for the newly won United States. Set policies for the country.
  • US Constitution adopted

    The US government was established.
