    Germany's army was this size beacause of the limitations imposed by the treaty of Versaille.
  • Britain adopts a policy of appeasement

    The term appeasement is commonly understood to refer to a diplomatic policy aimed at avoiding war by making concessions to another power. It has been described as "...the policy of settling international quarrels by admitting and satisfying grievances through rational negotiation and compromise, thereby avoiding the resort to an armed conflict which would be expensive, bloody, and possibly dangerous."
  • Germany withdraws from the League of Nations

    Because the Disarmament Conference was a failure and Hitler needed to rearm Germany. Hitler used the meeting with the League of Nations about disarmament because he knew that France would refuse. Hitler was munipulative and stormed out making it seem like he wanted peace but France was the problem.
  • Hitler declares treaty of versaille nule and void

    He had justification, the treaty of versaille eventhough it is an international agreement, was unfair to Germany and it took many priveleges that cannot be denied to a nation nowadays. Germany had to pay the allies, they were blamed for the war, their economy was devastated, and they regulated their military. Hitler had justification in doing this, and many countries appeased to it because they understood the situation germany had been through. Nonetheless hitler went too far.

    Mussolini invaded ethiopia to make a bigger empire and acquire more territory. This gave him resources and partial control of the red sea where the suez canal was. This made him a stronger leader and made a stronger italy.

    Of course it was justified because the treaty of versaille had been unfair and even oppresive with Germany. Every country, even for internal reasons need an army. The case of the Rhineland, a buffer zone beteween germany and france, was justified by many germans because they were becoming stronger and reaquiring their lost territory. Moreover many germans still lived in the Rhineland and were eager to be part of the Nazi republic as other territories that hitler occupied (the sudenland area)

    Rome-Berlin Axis, Coalition formed in 1936 between Italy and Germany. An agreement formulated by Italy’s foreign minister Galeazzo Ciano informally linking the two fascist countries was reached on October 25, 1936. It was formalized by the Pact of Steel in 1939. The term Axis Powers came to include Japan as well.
  • Hitler Occupies Austria

    Austria welcomed Hitler in their territory because they were a Germanic, meaning that they share the same culture, language, history and ideales with the Germans. They were also defeated in WWI and wanted to regain power as well.

    Hitler didnt had to worry, neither france nor great britain was ready to fight him over this. They had no army whatsoever and were not ready to fight another because of this annexation. The policy of appeasement continued in the rest of europe while hitler gained more power.

    Stallin would promote and agree with this trety because of his fears of a German invasion to Russian territory. He beleived the only way to promote peace in Europe was by signing this pacts with the Nazis, also he knew that hitler would not fight a war in two fronts and hoped that with signing of this mutual agreement he would invade the western countries. They both aggred to keep neutral in the possible event of an european conflict.

    On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland. The Polish army was defeated within weeks of the invasion.
