Events Leading to the Revolution

  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    Bans settlement West of the Appalachian Mountains. That land ends up becoming Indian Territory. The Proclamation angered many colonists because they felt that it was a plot to keep them under tight control of England.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    The Sugar Act set a tax on molasses and sugar that was brought into the colonies. The colonists were angry about the sugar act because of what it did the economy at the time.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    The Stamp Act taxed American Colonists, making them pay a tax on each kind of printed paper. The Colonists did not like the Stamp Act because it was yet another tax.
  • Repeal of Stamp Act

    Repeal of Stamp Act
    The Stamp Act was voted to repeal by Parliament after months of protest. The Colonists didn't like the Stamp Act so they were happy that it was repealed.
  • Townshend Acts

    Townshend Acts
    A serious of acts that were Introduced to Parliament. This included taxes on things such as glass, paper and tea. The Colonists did not like the Townshend Acts because it was another tax that they saw as pointless.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    After American Colonists began protesting they started to throw objects. This lead to soldiers firing at the Colonists leading to five of them dying and three being injured. This event ended up being heavily used as propaganda against the British Military. The Colonists were very angered seeing as five of them were killed by the military.
  • The Boston Tea Party

    The Boston Tea Party
    Sam Adams created the idea of the "tea party" with The Sons of Liberty. $18,000 worth of tea ended up being dumped into the Boston Harbor. The Colonists had very mixed reactions about the Boston Tea Party.
  • The First Continental Congress

    The First Continental Congress
    56 delegates from 12 colonies (excluding Georgia) met for the First Continental Congress in 1774. This was actually a secret because they didn't want Great Britain to know of them moving together peacefully. At the Continental Congress they made a plan to respond to the Intolerable Acts.
