    Maine was admitted into the U.S. as a free state. Missouri was admitted into to the U.S. as a slave state. Compromise draws line though U.S.. Every south state in line would be a slave state, while every state on the North side would be a free state. Escaped slaves from North would be brought back.

    Nat Turners Rebellion

    The Rebellion of 1831 spread fear in the south. Killing 60 people, it resulted in retaliation for the rebellion, even those not involved.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850

    California became a free state. Territories could decide to be state or free states, if they applied for statehood. The Fugitive Slave Act concluded that aiding runaway slaves would be illegal. Texas gave up it's claim of New Mexico for 10 million allowing texas to pay off their debt, and made a new boundary.

    Nebraska was split into two so there were 2 territories. Kansas and Nebraska. Slavery would be decided by the voters. As a result, Democrats were pro slavery. The republican party gained power amond slavery. A plethora of violence occurred during this event.

    The supreme court of 1857 said that people of africa were not citizens and they could not sue the federal court for freedom. slaves were property. the also ruled that the missouri compromise was illegal. The government can not tell whether its a free state or a slave state. The result were that anti-slavery voted for Abraham Lincoln for president in 1860.

    John Brown led a raid in anti slavery revolt on an arsenal called Harpers Ferry. The raid failed and he was captured, and hanged for treason and conspiracy.

    The election of 1860 promised many things, if the republicans won the election. 1) "End the spread of slavery." 2) "Give free land to the south to settlers." 3)"Southerns states selected from the union or U.S.." 4)"Make secession illegal." Lincoln was elected, his first act made secession illegal. The first shots were fired at Fort Sumter.
