    1850 The Compromise of 1850 including the Fugitive slave act

    Congress passed The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 on September 18, 1850. this was part of the Compromise of 1850. This act stated that all slaves must be returned to there owners. Slaves had to be returned even if they were currently in a free state. It also stated the federal government was to find return escaped slaves.
    This act increased the conflict over slavery. The slave and free states were both trying to gain control.

    1854-1856 Bleeding Kansas

    Pro-slavery and Anti-slavery forces came to the Kansas territory. They began fighting. Each side wanted control of the Kansas territory.
    This was like a small Civil War. The Pro and Anti-salvery sides were becoming increasingly violent. Each side was going to do whatever it took.

    1854 Kansas-Nebraska Act

    This became law on May 30th 1854, and voided the Missouri Compromise. This allowed slavery in Kansas and Nebraska. It also allowed states to choose if they wanted to be slave or free.
    Tensions increase between the North and South. Pro-slavery and Anti-slavery groups fought to control each territory.

    Preston Brooks vs Charles Sumner 1856

    Representative Preston Brooks attacked Senator Charles Sumner with a walking cane. He beat him almost to death in the United States Senate chamber.
    Brooks was Pro-slavery and Sumner was Anti-slavery. This heightened the tension between both sides. Even members of the government were becoming physically violent.

    The United States Supreme Court ruled that people of African descent were not citizens, either slave or free. They were property this meant that the U.S. Constitution did not include or protect them.
    This made Southerners happy, and outraged the North.
  • 1858 Lincoln-Douglas Debates

    1858 Lincoln-Douglas Debates

    This was a series of seven debates between Lincoln and Douglas.They were both running for the Senate in Illinois. Theses debates were held between August 21, 1858 and October 15, 1858. The main topic was slavery. They both were personally opposed to slavery. Douglas backed popular sovereignty and Lincoln wanted to prevent the spread of slavery into the territories. Douglas won the election.
    the south were feeling threatened by the anti slavery Republican party.

    1859 John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry

    The raid began on October 16 and ended on October 18. The goal of this raid was to spark a slave uprising. During the raid ten of his men including two of his sons were killed. Brown was injured. Virginia found him guilty of treason and murder. he was hung on December 2, 1859.
    This confirmed the south's fears that the North had a conspiracy.

    Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States. He did not think there was a way to eliminate slavery. He was against slavery and wanted to prevent its spread.
    His election sparked the beginning of the Civil War.
