    French and Indian War

    The cause of the French and Indian war was the English wanting to expand their land west. The British lost the first couple of battles because they were ignorant to the different tactics the Indians used during war. The British won by capturing key cities like Quebec and Montreal. The effects of the war was the creation of the Treaty of Paris ,The Proclamation of 1763 and, England increasing taxes on colonist to help pay war dept.
  • Proclamation Act

    Proclamation Act
    The Proclamation of 1763 reserved land in the west of the Appalachian Mountains for Indians. The colonies were very upset, and completely ignored this act and kept going west shortly after England began increasing taxes on the colonists to help pay for war dept.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    England was responsible for taxing sugar and molasses. This act was passed by parliament to raise money by taxing the colonist after becoming in dept from the French and Indian war. This was significant because this was the start of British passing laws against the colonist. As a result the colonist began to smuggle sugar , but if they were caught smuggling goods they would be sent to British courts instead of a colonial court.

    The Quartering Act required colonist to provide food, drink and living space to British soldiers.

    The Stamp Act was passed by England this required every document to have an official government stamp , this act was the first direct tax on the colonies. The colonies were very upset and began to protest , which led to the delayed the start of the stamp act policies.

    Stamp Act Congress

    The representatives from the nine colonies were involved in the Stamp Act Congress , this meeting took place in New York City. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the Stamp Act. The result of the meeting was Parliament could not tax the colonies because colonies did not have representatives in Parliament.

    Declaratory Act
    The Declaratory Act was passed by parliament to repeal the Stamp Act but declared it had the right to rule and tax the colonies.
  • Townshend Act

    Townshend Act
    Charles Townshend was responsible for this act , he named this act after himself.The Townshend act was a tax on goods such as lead, paper, glass , and tea. It also caused the writs of assistance which allowed officers to search any house for smuggled goods. The money was used to pay the salaries of colonial soldiers. Many colonist viewed the taxation as an abuse of power and were completely against it.

    • The Boston Massacre was an incident where British soldiers shot into a crowd killing 5 people.
    • Crispus Attucks was an African American who is believed to be the first killed in the American Revolution.
    • The Boston Massacre was a signal event leading to the Revolutionary War
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    Samuel Adams , the Sons of liberty are responsible for the Boston Tea party protest , this event led to the Intolerable Acts.
    * The Sons of liberty protested because they wanted to show parliament how they felt about the unfair taxes.
    Colonists dressed up as natives and dumped 92,000 lbs of tea into the Boston Harbor.
    The British's reaction to the Boston Tea party was shutting down the the Boston Harbor and made them pay all tea.

    On 1774 the Quebec Act was passed by the English parliament to create a permanent government to replace the temporary government that was created around 1763.This act also gave the French Canadians total religious freedom and protected the French form of civil law. The Quebec Act is often recognized as a source of increased American resentment towards British rule in North America.

    The colonist were mainly affected by the Intolerable act , this law was passed to punish colonist for the Boston tea party and to tighten government control over the colonies. These laws made the all the colonists very angry. They joined together in boycotting , prepared the colonists for their war with the British and to declare their independence.

    First Continental Congress

    The First continental congress was organized by all the 12 colonies except Georgia , some of the founding fathers were George Washington , Thomas Jefferson , Alexander Hamilton, and Benjamin Franklin. These founding fathers met up in Philadelphia, they met up in response to the Intolerable Acts as a result of this meeting the right colonists had to run their own government was defended. Also agreed on no military action unless attacked upon and agreed to meet up again.

    The Second Continental Congress was organized by all 13 colonies , some of the founding fathers were Thomas Jefferson,George Washington,John Hancock,James Wilson.The Second Continental Congress was held in Philadelphia their purpose of the meeting was to finish was had not been cleared up during the First Continental Congress.The result of this meeting was the creation of the Continental Army,the Declaration of the causes & necessity of taking up Arms" , the also sent the Olive Branch Petition.

    Battle of Concord and Lexington
    The British were after guns and ammunition hidden in concord , they are also after the colonist. When the redcoats reached Lexington there was 70 minutemen waiting. There was no weapons in concord and the Sons of liberty warn colonist of approaching British troops. This is significant because the battle of Concord and Lexington is considered the first battle of the American Revolution.

    The Battle of Bunker Hill took place in Boston , the redcoats stormed three times but were forced to retreat. As a result the British won and gave colonist confidence they could win the war.

    The Author of the pamphlet Common Sense was Thomas Paine The author wanted to show his support of our independence from Britain. This was very significant because it helped persuade undecided colonist to support independence.

    Declaration of Independence
    The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson, it was presented on July 2 and approved July 4 , 1776. The significance of the document was it formally announcing the break with England. There was three main ideas to this document the " Inalienable rights " - life, liberty , pursuit of happiness unfair laws and taxes and England has violated the Social Contract.The colonial response to the Declaration of Independence was positive , they supported it.
