    Nat Turner's slave rebellion spread fear in the south. 60 people were killed. As a result, white people treated slaves worse then before and they were even killed.

    California is admitted as a free state. Mexican Cession got to choose weather they wanted to be a free or slave state (popular sovereignty). Texas gave up its claims to Mexico for 10 million dollars, this way Tx. paid off their debt ad they got their borders. The Fuguative Slave Act was included which said that it was a crime to help runaway slave even in the north.

    Nebraska was divided into two territories: Nebraska and Kansas. There would be popular sovereignty in both territories. Bleeding Kansas was very tragic ad a lot of violence was involved. The republican party was created and it gained power among those against slavery.

    All people of African ancestry were not citizens and could not sue in federal court for their freedom or anything else. Slaves were considered property. This also said that the Missouri Compromise was not legal. This caused for anti-slavery people to vote for Lincoln.

    This failed raid was led by John Brown at Harper's Ferry. The purpose of this was to revolt against slavery. He was captured and hanged after being convicted for conspiracy and treason.

    Abraham Lincoln was elected president. Some of the states starting seceding after his election. His first act was to make secession illegal. He promised to end the spread of slavery and give free land in the west to settlers. First shots are fired at Fort Sumter.
