In 1947 the United States officially introduced the foreign policy of containment which said that the US would not invade already communist countries but they would send economic or militaristic aid to countries under communist threat.

The Marshall Plan was a plan in which the US would send economic aid to foreign countries that needed help after the war. The Marshall plan provided over $13 billion to 17 different countries.

After World War II, Germany was split into two parts, the democratic-controlled east, and the communist-controlled west. In Berlin, the communist west blockaded the democratic citizens in Berlin, stopping supplies from getting to them. From June 6th, 1948 to May 12th, 1949 the US flew over 1.5 million tons of supplies to citizens suffering from the Berlin Blockade. These supplies aided over 2.5 million Germans.

On April 4th, 1949 countries such as Great Britain, the US, France, Canada, and many others formed a military alliance known as NATO or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. NATO was created to counter Soviet forces in Europe.

In 1945, the US began to give Chinese nationalists economic aid during the Chinese civil war. In 1950 the nationalists lost and the communist leader Mao Zedong took control.

The Korean war was a large success for the containment policy. The US provided military aid to South Korea when the communist north attacked. The US was successful in stopping North Korea from making the south communist.

The Vietnam War was probably the biggest failure of the containment policy. The war resulted in almost 60,000 American and over 1 million North Vietnamese deaths. In the end, the US failed to prevent Vietnam from turning communist.

DQ: Was the Containment Policy successful in preventing the spread of communism. The Containment Policy was both successful and unsuccessful. While the policy was successful in Europe, it was largely unsuccessful in Asia. The largest failure of the Containment Policy would have to be the defeat during the Vietnam War. Once Vietnam became communist its neighbors, Laos and Cambodia followed soon after.
