Euro Transportation Technology

  • INTRODUCTION

With the advent of the industrial revolution and colonization, there were much more resources available and a need to be able to move from place to place quickly, whether it was taking care of a colony or for military purposes. These factors lead to many new transportation technologies.
  • First Zeppelin Launched

    First Zeppelin Launched
Ferdinand von Zeppelin launches the first successful airship. Zeppelins could be used for transport, but they were also effectively used in WWI for military gain.
  • Motor Driven Airplane

    Motor Driven Airplane
Orville and WIlbur Wright fly the first motor-driven airplane. It was a practical form of transportation at this moment, but it set up a foundation for improvments to transportation in the future. It showed that it can be possible to make effective air transportation.
  • Henry Ford develops an Assembly Line of the Model-T

This made it practical to own a car in America because as a result of there being a higher supply of cars (because of the assembly line) the price went down.
  • Planes Begin Carrying Passengers in Europe between London and Paris

Planes Begin Carrying Passengers in Europe between London and Paris
The significance of this is the convenience to make traveling easier and people are able to travel from place to place quicker. Also, the development of planes being able to carry passengers shows how they will be able to be used for other things such as military. It made negotiations and communication easier because of the decreased travel time.
  • First Traffic Lights in Britain

    First Traffic Lights in Britain
This standardized the utilization of cars in Britain. It made an organized system for transportation.
  • First Non-stop Flight across the Atlantic

Charles A. Lindbergh made the first non-stop flight across the Atlantic. He traveled more than 3,600 miles in only 33 hours. Passenger air transportation companies came into service in this period as well. Lindbergh's flight was significant because it showed the actual practical use of the technology of the Airplane. Airplanes were able to travel far quickly and effectively. Before this flight, a boat would have been needed to cross the Atlantic and it would have taken more time.
  • Autobahn

Construction of the autobahn was set up by Hitler. It proved to be a valuable asset for Germany during WWII with the Blitzkrieg technique. The Autobahn is also a major path of European travel. With more Europeans traveling on it to reach their destination faster, it allows for more tourism and growth of the German economy.
  • Douglas DC-3

    Douglas DC-3
This aircraft had a major significance in the history of aviation. It made the current commercial air travel possible.
  • At this point about one tenth of British families own a car

This is significant because it shows the scope of how much transportation is affecting Europe. 1/10 may not be that much now, but in this time period, it was a significant amount.
  • Modern Helicopters invented

Helicopters were invented and they made it easier to travel from place to place. They did not have as much of an impact as planes did because they were not the first convenient air transport, but they did help in the military in some cases and more precise shorter range flying. They were more of a luxury item than effective transportation.
  • 3-point Seat Belt is Invented

    3-point Seat Belt is Invented
This is significant because with the amount of car owners is on the rise (32%), it needed to be safer. With seat belts it is much less dangerous.
  • First person in space in Vostok 1 Spacecraft

Russian Yuri Gagarin became the first human being to reach space in the Vostok 1 spacecraft. Later that year, Alan Shepard became the first American. This breakthrough in transportation was significant because it showed how it is possible to go to space. It also influenced America to catch up because of the Cold War arms race.
  • Chanel Tunnel Opens

The Chanel tunnel between Britain in France resulted in quick transport by train. An airplane or a boat would have been needed to cross the Chanel before. The new tunnel made it practical and economical to cross the Chanel.
  • OVERALL SIGNIFICANCE

With the world transforming from a local to a more global community in the 20th century, transportation was a key factor in making this possible. It was much easier to travel from place to place with technologies like planes. Additionally, the invention and manufacturing of transportation helped to boost some economies like with the construction of the autobahn. Finally, the new transportation technologies were key for military purposes. They would be able to transport troops more effectively.
