This session included our grade 2-6 teachers, who are using Kidblog with their students this year. The first part of the session was to learn how to set up and maintain a Kidblog account. The second part of the session looked at ways blogging can be used to support authentic student learning.

Along with a team including teachers, administrators, school counsellor, our FNMI Lead Teacher, and Chris Windle from AADAC; our grade 6 students visited Assumption church to participate in a leadership retreat. The focus was on the 40 Developmental Assets. Grade 6 leadership activities will continue throughout the year on the 3rd Friday of each month.

Miss Dickson's grade 4s skyped with a class in New York to discuss the novel, The One and Only Ivan. The classes were partnered for the "Global Read Aloud."

The grade 4, 5 and 6 teachers at Ecole St. Mary School have all signed up for either the French or English titles in Global Read Aloud 2012. The teachers are using blogs, twitter and skype to communicate and collaborate with classes around the world. The Grade 4 - 6 English classes are using Ipads and an Apple TV within the classroom to read "The One and Only Ivan" by Katherine Applegate with the students.

Our students collected over 800 lbs of non-perisheable food items to be donated to the local food banks. The food was brought out to avaiting trucks while students lined our walkway as seen here in our "scenes of October."

Our Learning Coach, Crystal Lothian arranged for our students to participate in a live webcast, hosted by Scholastic and featuring Taylor Swift. The message was on the importance of reading and the students were able to submit questions. About 350 of our students gathers in our library/media centre to watch the webcast.

Ms. Dickson and her class held an introductory skype with Mrs. Witherspoons class from Wellford, South Carolina. The skype was used to introduce the students and plan a further project. They decided to write a shared story using Google Docs.

These two important resources have been placed on 10 iPads as eBooks. Teachers and support staff are invited to sign out an iPad on evenings and weekends.

We used the "Open Spaces" or "EDCAMP" model for our professional learning. A total of 14 sessions were offered and shared throughout the day. This was capacity building at its finest.

The students have been using a web-based program named Tagxedo. This website allows students to turn their words into word clouds. The students have made several word clouds that focused on adjective use to describe a noun. The creations are wonderful and will be shared with their parents on various special occasions through - out the year.

Project approved for Savio Baptista and Mary Anne Wensveen to re-organize music instruments and provide inservice to teachers who want to improve their ability to integrate them into their instruction. They are looking for ways to bring out more creativity in our students.

Doddi Matz and Crystal Lothian, along with Lorelie Lenaour visited Gerald Probe School to learn about Fast Forward, a web based program designed to meet individual student needs. The program strengthens memory, attention, processing rate and sequencing - the cognitive skills essential for reading success. We will be piloting the software with 5 students.

The grade 6 English students are learning how to use an internet tool known as Blabberize. This site allows students to upload photos, create an animated mouth on the photo and record their voices. The students are currently studying 1st person perspective and have choosen a character from the novel "The One and Only Ivan" by Katerine Applegate. The students then searched, saved and uploaded a photo of the animal character they were going to become. See here.

After connecting through Twitter our gade 5 French Immersion class participated in a Mystery Skype with a grade 4 class from the Jewish Private School in San Diego, California.

The majority of teachers held student led interviews where students demonstrated learning for their parents. Some students demonstrated various web 2.0 tools including Apps, Kidblog, and Glogster.

Andrea Nemecek, Annie Greeno and Crystal Lothian looked at ways religion can exist in the 21st century. They explored tools such as God Chat, Jazzin with Jesus, and iGod.

Along with teachers from a few other schools Theresa Mead, Jodi Merriman, and Jacqui Chartier watched teachers at Nicholas Sheran School (through a fishbowl theatre) teach DAILY 5. After the observation they met with the teachers for a question and answer period.

Here's the project outline: 1.The two classes will meet at an agreed upon time via Google Docs to brainstorm a list of “I wonder...” questions. Do we want a theme for these questions or just leave it wide open? 2.Each “I wonder...” question will be assigned to a pair of students (one from each school). 3.Students will work independently to answer the questions by using all resources available. (Internet, local experts, library books, etc.) 4.Students will then use the “Better Answer” strategy

Grade 5 French Immersion students are learning how to use Microsoft 2010 to the fullest capacity. Students are developing skills and knowledge on various program applications. The students are showing mastery by completing various projects and applying their newly learned skills.

Beginning December 10th, the grades 3 and 5 French Immersion classes went on a tour of four homes for senior citizens - Edith Cavell, Martha's House, St. Mike's Health Centre, and Sunrise Village. We performed several songs for the residents and then sang carols with them.

The Grade One Immersion students have been using the IPads to create a Phototangler of colors. The students have been learning all about colors in science and have been practicing differentiating between the spectrum of colors. The students used this project to work collaboratively and find all the different colors in our school. The students then used the images that were captured to create a phototangler of their assigned color. See them here.

Our first ever student retreat was held today. We started with a Eucharistic celebration led by Fr. Kevin. Every student then visited 5 stations throughout the day completing activities around the "feed my sheep" theme. A turkey dinner was provided for everyone in our school for lunch. The day ended with a faith type video for everyone in the gym.

Our "Helping Hands" club organized this used clothing sale to provide a service to those who may be in need. A number of other schools in the division donated to the cause. Left over clothing was donated to Catholic Charities.

Each class prepared 3 Christmas gift baskets for the homeless shelter. On this day we present them to homeless shelter representatives and clients at our school chapel. The grade 5 and 6 leadership club students were leaders in this project.

At 12:30 today our Gr. 6s Skyped with Mrs. Rinaldi's grade 6 class at Poughkeepsie Day School. They brainstormed a novel that they will plan to study together in the new year. After narrowing it down to a few titles, the teachers will work to decide which one they will go with.

Our Kindergarten teachers Keely S, Brigida C, and Kiera B will explore a variety of tools to explore letter/number printing; including iPads and a vnumber of other manipluatives.

The teachers from the two classes will be reading book synopsis on 2 pre-selected novels from which then the students will vote to determine the novel we will read together. The novel again will be in a digital format and the students will work collaboratively on book related projects. In addition, the classes will discuss the parameters of the mystery boxes that we will be sending to one another that reflect something about the area that we live in.

This duo spent the week in our school as artists in residence engaging the French Immersion students in a wonderful Fine Arts experience. A performance was held on the Friday.

The students are learning a number of advanced operations with powerpoint (e.g. embedding video) and creating French presentations about their favorite animal. Learning Coach and classroom teacher are team teaching this activity.

After reading the book, "I is for Inuksuk, An Arctic Celebration." the children were given 8 pieces of Lego each (various sizes) so, that they could build and Inuksuk of their own. Each student gave his/her Inuksuk a special title. We had very interesting titles for each Inuksuk such as, "Four Directions", "Pointing to the Love of Jesus", "Explore", "Love", "Go Play", "The Light", "Angel Wings". 4DE are writing a story with Mrs. Witherspoons grade 4 class in Wellford, South Carolina. Our students write the first part and send it to them. They illustrate our writing and then write the next paragraph. They send it back to us and we illustrate their paragraph and write the next one. Etc... etc...

Bridget Pastoor visited the grade 6s to talk about local and provincial government and to share stories about her experiences. This was authentic learning, aligning with the grade 6 Social Studies curriculum.

Students from both classes were combined to create groups of 4. These groups interacted vis TodaysMeet, a backchannelling tool. The students had guiding questions created by Mrs. Rinaldi and myself which related to the story that was being read aloud through Skype. Mrs. Rinaldi read the first chapter and I rea the second chapter. It was during this time that the students worked in their groups of 4 to question, comment and create a dialogue of their thoughts on the reading. See example here.

This weeks theme is an image of an old fashioned key laying in some green grass with snow falling. Students write exatly 100 words with this picture prompt. See example here.

Step 1: The kids were going around the school taking close-up pictures. They were to take a picture of an object or a part of an object that would be difficult for people to recognize.
Step 2: They chose one picture that they put up on their own blog with the question "Qu'est-ce que c'est?" or "What is this?" below it.
Step 3: Invite others to make an educated guess as to what the item is. They will have 2 weeks to respond to the blog. At this point....the kids will reveal what the item is! -

The students put an interesting twist on their 100 Word Challenge entry this week. After writing the piece, they voice recorded their writing using the Audioboo App and embedded the podcast into their blog post along side of the written piece. See example here.

1WE students were to build a 3D Sculpture from a flat piece of Aluminum foil.
They first had to draw their idea, (plan) on a piece of paper, then build. We had a wide range of 3D Aluminum foil sculptures such as boats, necklaces, mountains, cones, and beavers. -
We are having a family gathering to celebrate and understand the transitions our students go through during their education journey.

Fr. Kevin will be joining us for Ash Wednesday Mass in our gym. This is the first time we have had Mass on Ash Wednesday in a number of years.

The students worked in Groups of 4 to build a 3D object from various recycled materials. The students first had to discuss what they would build in their group and to try to incoporate all of the materials at their station. The process was exciting and engaging for the learner, (and the teacher) from the brainstorming of ideas to the actual working together to build their object. This activity involved so many of the Multiple Intellegence Theory Learner Processes !

DI - students were given a task to demonstrate their research of the planets in the solar system, earth + moon, and the Sun. Students were given freedom to represent their learning as creatively as they wished but the criteria was very specific as to what needed to be included.

Students will leave the school about 8:30 in order to arrive at the church hall for 9:00. There will be various activities planned focused on the theme of Gifts of the Holy Spirit. They will also spend some time making sandwiches for the hungry in the community before receiving lunch themselves (provided by the CWL).

Miss Dickson and her grade 4s have completed a Cupcake Draw in support of the Save the Children Campaign as a Lenten service project. They raised a total of $131.

Savio B. and Mary Anne W. are leading 12 teachers in a half days session on how to incorporate music into their daily lessons. They will be using the various instruments that currently exist in our school.

students in 6WI taught their partners from 2MI how to navigate in the internet and save pictures to their personal files. They wrote a collaborative ST. Pat's story - demonstrating many features in microsoft word such as text art, font and color changes, etc.. 6s then showed the 2s how to insert pictures from their files into their word document.
They worked collaboratively on editting the stories too. -

The students developed accounts on goanimate, which is a web based tool that allows students to create dialogue between ditigal characters. The students are currently developing original dialogue and will use their blogs and the medium to share the finished product.

The grade 6 students, parents and teachers provided the staff of Ecole St. Mary with ethnic inspired cuisine. As part of the Lenten Lunch students presented their service project to the staff and asked the staff to consider "A Corporal Work" as a way to say "thank- you" for the meal.

This was a culminating activity of a collaborative book study that was mentioned earlier in this timeline. The students represented characters and shared presentations that were completely self-directed. A number of younger classes and staff members joined in the celebration.

During this celebration - The Resurrection of the Lord, the students sang and read; but the most engaging parts was the art that was projected on the wall. It was all art created by the students in the class.

Description: Spend 30 minutes inside a First Nation classroom in Saskatchewan and experience a taste of aboriginal culture and learning. Join Dean Shareski and DEN STAR Sarah Thompson as we broadcast live from her elementary classroom. Watch students perform traditional dances and hear about their experiences connecting with classrooms around the world. You'll also get insight into their culture and explore the similarities and differences of learning and living on a First Nations reserve.

Mr. Lajeunesse and Mr. Gross (healthy hands club leaders) worked with Mrs. Lothian and the students to create this video that was shared at the division Spiritual Development Day.

Doddi Matz and Crystal Lothian spent a day developing a lapbook with foldables to use within her social studies program. The grade three students are required to learn about various elements of 4 countries. We used the Outcomes from the program of studies to develp the information that needed to be learned and then created this lapbook as an engaging way of delivering the content.

Lise M and Heidee W will work to align outcomes in French throughout division II. This will lead to less overlapp of content and better student engagement.

Dayna V, Jodi M, and Crystal L will explore ways grade 2 students cany be better engaged through the integration of technology. They will explore Kidblog, french websites, the Smartboard, and a variety of tech projects.

The students select debate topics on relevant school issues such as lunch hour rules, class selections and technology. Each topic will have 2 students in favour and 2 against. Students will hold public debates on the topic at a later debate.

Greg M. and Inez M. will attend this meeting with other schools who have been piloting the Individualized Education Planning Tool (IEPT). We will be presenting on how rthe tool has supported a shift in practice at our school.

We have been working with Randolf Middle School from Charlotte, North Carolina this year. They recieved a grant to globally connect with othjer school s who emphasize languages and Greg M came across their offer on Twitter. This has led to them sending 3 teachers from their school for a visit to plan some collaborative activities for next year. They will be here from May 29th to June 2nd.

Three staff members from Randolph Middle School in Charlotte, North Carolina have been visiting our school. Using skype and iPads their students took our students on a tour of their school and then we did the same.

Members of the Lethbridge Rugby Club visited our school throughout the week to teach our students how to play rugby. Promoting fhysical fitness ans a healthy lifestyle.
