Abygail decided to take figure skating lessons because her father taught her how to skate at a young age and since her mother encouraged her to take dance lessons, Abygail believed figure skating would fulfill both of her parents' wishes: dancing and learning how to skate. In Erikson's fourth stage, industry versus inferiority, the crisis is between a child successfully developing skills for what is demanded (industry), and a child who cannot learn what is needed from them (inferiority).

Through her peers and social events, Abygail discovers that she is an introverted extrovert-- a person who is outgoing with her peers but shy when around new people. Coming from a Filipino culture, where family festivities are common, Abygail realizes why she is how she is. In Erikson's fifth stage, identity versus identity confusion, the crisis is between an individual figuring out who they are (identity) versus someone who still hasn't fully grasped who they are (identity confusion).

Abygail begins a relationship with Jake because he made her feel safe and loved, and openly accepting her for who she is. In Erikson's sixth stage, intimacy versus isolation, the crisis is between entering a relationship where both parties can depend on each other emotionally and mentally (intimacy), or avoiding any intimacy and commitment (isolation).
