  • Autonomy vs. Shame

    Autonomy vs. Shame
    Quentin (age three) wants to choose his own clothes at the store, he wants to do this to feel independent. If denied doing so it can lower his self-esteem.
    This is an example of Erikson's second stage, Autonomy vs. Shame.
    Between the ages of 1-3, kids start to interact with their environment as they learn how to control their actions. During this stage they start to establish independence and want to do things for themselves, this can include choosing their clothes or deciding what to eat.
  • Industry vs. Inferiority

    Industry vs. Inferiority
    Quentin (age eight) is in grade school and feels accomplished by how he's better at math than his peers, but at lunch, he doesn't like to interact with his peers which makes him feel inferior.
    This is an example of Erikson's fourth stage, Industry vs. Inferiority
    Between the ages of 6-12 kids start to compare themselves to others, when they do this they'll feel a sense of pride or inferiority. If they start to disconnect from their peers the inferiority feeling could go on to Adulthood.
  • Intimacy vs. Isolation

    Intimacy vs. Isolation
    Quentin (age 28) has found himself and is ready to share his life with another person. He gets married and is ready to maintain a strong relationship
    This is an example of Erikson's sixth stage, Intimacy vs. Isolation.
    After a person has a strong sense of himself and is ready to maintain a relationship, they can begin to share their life with another person. If a person doesn't have a strong connection with themselves it could cause isolation.
